This episode marks the first of three appearances by the character Gordon "Gordy the Ghoul" Spangler. Gordy is a morgue attendant who runs a lottery based on the birth years of the corpses brought into the morgue. Gordy's job and greed make him an ideal informant for Kolchak. He also appears in the episodes They Have Been, They Are, They Will Be... and The Youth Killer. Gordy was portrayed by actor John Fiedler who also had appeared in the Twilight Zone episode Night of the Meek.

Fiedler also provided the voice of Piglet in animated Winnie the Pooh movies and TV shows for nearly a quarter of a century.

This episode has the first appearance of actress Carol Ann Susi as character Monique Marmelstein. Monique is the niece of Abe Marmelstein, a bigwig at the Independent News Service's (I.N.S.) New York office that Kolchak's boss, Tony Vincenzo, answers to. Monique works at the Chicago I.N.S. as an intern. Carl is forced to bring Monique along while covering a story in The Zombie because of who her uncle is. Despite Kolchak sending Monique back to New York in a cab, she is back by the following episode, They Have Been, They Are, They Will Be...

Monique also returns for one final appearance in Firefall.

The Zombie is one of only two episodes of Kolchak: The Night Stalker not to have an appearance by Jack Grinnage as Kolchak's comedic workplace foil Ron "Uptight" Updyke. The other episode he didn't appear in was The Sentry, the final episode of the series.

This episode has a cameo appearance by actor Scatman Crothers. Crothers went on to appear in the films The Shining (1980) and Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983).

Actor Antonio Fargas appears in this episode as mobster Sweetstick Weldon. Fargas became well known for his portrayal of the character Huggybear a year later on Starsky and Hutch (1975-79). He later appeared in the horror films Firestarter (1984), Howling VI: The Freaks (1991) and The Borrower (1991).

Charles Aidman plays the role of Captain Leo Winwood in this episode. Aidman appeared previously in the Ghost Story episode Alter-ego, the Twilight Zone episodes And When the Sky Was Opened and Litttle Girl Lost, and the Thriller episodes Knock Three-One-Two and The Terror in Teakwood. He later went on to serve as the narrator in the 1980s run of The Twilight Zone.
