Well, Tobe Hooper decided to give us a vampire film, and the vampire looks amazingly like Nosferatu. This is not a minus, though, because surprisingly it works! Loads of atmosphere, vampires everywhere, and the spookiest house in horror history combine to make this a minor masterpiece. Most likely the best television movie ever.

This movie is really boring. It has very little action and hardly any music which is needed to set the scene. This movie could have been so much better. If your a real horror fan you should watch it, but if your not a horror fan than don't waste your time with this movie.

I found this to be a great movie with many of the elements that I like in a good horror film:
-small, lonely town.
-scary "haunted" house.
-cemetary scene's
-suspense leading up to seeing the main vampire.
-the good guys have at least a little clue as to what is happening.

This could've been a good movie. Yet, it was not. Normally, I don't compare a movie to it's book counterpart (exceptions include the sequal to Jurassic Park, The Lost World) yet this time it couldn't be helped. This movie puts the book to shame. The lighting and camera work was so bad it was impossible to concentrate on the scene. The movie dragged on and on in a monotonous account of the events that took place. Not worthy of having the title it has.

This - and 'Misery' - remain the best adaptations of a Stephen King novel ever committed to screen. Beyond that, Salems Lot also remains the scariest TV show ever made. The cast are excellent and Tobe Hooper's direction is flawless. Certain sequences in this production - the vampire boy scratching at the window, the 'revived' vampire woman climbing off the autopsy table, David Soul's descent into a cellar filled with just-about-to-wake-up Undead, the initial appearance of the Master Vampire - still retain the power to chill, twenty plus years after the show first aired. A wonderful miniseries that should be watched in its three-hour entirety, not in the butchered theatrical version released to European cinemas. Absolutely brilliant.
