I havent heard it yet but a few people I know have. Apparently it's alot more experimental, and it takes a few listens to get into. Generally, when I hear "experimental" as a description it means I'm not going to like it but that's what they said about Radiohead's Kid A and I love that album so who knows.
If it's a Tool album, then i'm sure it won't be copying anything anyone else is doing at the time. Tool always has been innovative, and I'm sure the new album will be no exception. The critics already hate it, so that's saying I might like it! Critics don't know shit anyway.
Tool is one of the best bands to ever to grace the genre of metal. Give LATERALUS a few listens and don't expect anything "heavy" just mindfuckingly intense and intricate
