So what are some of the songs that creep you out the most?
I'll go with Hamburger Lady by Throbbing Gristle anyday... Dead Skin Mask by Slayer also always gets me when the child starts crying, "Mr. Gein, I don't want to play anymore." |

Good call on both. Years Ago - Just about anything from Welcome to My Nightmare is a great mention. Then again, almost anything from Cooper is easy to list. I've recently just been listening to the title track from Dada. What a surreal, strange nightmare that is.
Funny story about Cooper - I was on the main island of Hawaii years ago visiting my sister who lived there at the time. My brother, friend and myself decided to go stay one night at the luxurious hotel on the west side of the island, because we got my sister's residential rate. It was supposedly where all the celebs go, though I didn't imagine we actually would run into any.
Anyway, we check in and enter the complex. I say complex because the place was gigantic and had this little pseudo-river that you could ride a boat around the complex to get to your room or take this mini-tram deal. So we're walking in and I'm just stunned by the size of the place and we walk by this group of people. In the center is this guy with long black hair who I partially register and recognize.
After they passed, my friend says, "That was Howard Stern!" An old man (in his seventies I'd guess) was standing there too and he immediately said very excited, "Nope! That was Alice Cooper!" Then I realized that indeed I had just walked by none other than Alice Cooper and then proceeded to kick myself. A further ways down the path, I did it again and walked right past Pat Morita and his wife and only realized it after they were gone. D'oh! |

The Rob Zombie song from 'House Of A 1000 Corpses' that was on his album before the movie ever came out used to creep me out, because you would hear what sounded like a little girl torturing a woman towards the end. But then when I finaly saw the movie and realized it was Baby killing some unlikeable 70's chick, the song lost it's creepiness.
I still think Alice Cooper's 'Former Lee Warner' is one creepy song. DaDa is one of my favorite records, second only to 'From The Inside.' |

The intro to House of 1000 Corpses sets the mood though. Sounds like news reports about Dahmer.
Millie and Billie (From the Inside) still has one of the creepier lines I have heard -
Billie I dream of our children
They're frightening and gruesome and sad
And I don't want them growing inside me
They're no price for the love that we have
Just too strange. It even beats the whole body disposal verse in the song. |

I have always gotten creeped out in a respectful by The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. The lyrics are downright somber.
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead
When the skies of November turn gloomy.
With a load of iron ore - 26,000 tons more
Than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty
That good ship and true was a bone to be chewed
When the gales of November came early
The ship was the pride of the American side
Coming back from some mill in Wisconson
As the big freighters go it was bigger than most
With a crew and the Captain well seasoned.
Concluding some terms with a couple of steel firms
When they left fully loaded for Cleveland
And later that night when the ships bell rang
Could it be the North Wind they'd been feeling.
The wind in the wires made a tattletale sound
And a wave broke over the railing
And every man knew, as the Captain did, too,
T'was the witch of November come stealing.
The dawn came late and the breakfast had to wait

How cool! I never knew there was a song based on the Edmund Fitzgerald, though I guess I shouldn't be surprised. I've been actually been doing a bit of studying up on the wreck recently, for an entry for Lake Superior over on Dark Destinations. Did you know that they finally did bring up the ship's bell? Of course, it kind of killed that "mysterious disappearance" and wild supernatural theories about what happened when they finally found her at the bottom. But the whole "Witch of November" mythology of the Great Lakes is really fascinating stuff.
I just finished listening to a cover version of the song (was this a Gordon Lightfoot tune?) by Mitchelle Tanner. Excellent tune! I have to get that in the database. Thanks! |

I forgot to add the album Short Bus by Filter. There are a few songs in the middle of the cd that are excellent creepy. I'll have to find the name of the one that has the groaning in it, because every time I hear it, I think of The Exorcist.

Good call. On the same album, Cave's re-do of the Bob Dylan song, Death is Not the End also has a new layer of creepiness to it. |

I've always loved the storylines from King Diamond's albums Them, and Conspiracy.(The latter being a continuation of the former). But his album The Graveyard is by far my favorite bein about a gravedigger who exacts revenge on an abusive father after bein blamed and committed for the crime, very "creepy" way he goes about gettin his revenge.

| For me the creepiest song I can remember, I was 16 or 17 sitting in my room stoned, and on acid, listening to Ozzy's Children of the grave song for the first time ever, and I thought I had stumbled straight into a horror movie, it was awesome!:~) |
