I got my copy and watched it right away. my verdict is: AWESOME! an absolute follow up to halloween with the same scripters (carpenter and debra hill), directed (carpenter), producer (hill), and two of the stars (jamie lee and nancy loomis). the story is kinda corny, but great suspense and suprise help. there are many main characters however, which may make it confusing. but the film is right behind halloween and suspiria in my top three. i'm glad i just bought it for $7 rather than losing my head trying to find it for rent!

i agree totally man, that movie is sweet. it has great atmosphere and direction and the usual creepy synthesizer score from carpenter. i remember the first time i saw it a couple years back, it really creeped me out. i saw it on tv back when stations like tnt showed that stuff. i may not have been around when creature features and chiller theater etc were broadcast, but up until recently there was at least stuff like monster vision and up all night, and that really late at night 100 % weird and stuff keeping the tradition of late night horror on tv alive. now even those are gone. im especially sad that monstervision died out. i have fond memories of watching so many cool horror movie with friends, staying up till all hours of the night. seeing movies like night of the living dead and motel hell, i even remember once seeing evil dead on tnt MANY years ago. all i could remember was the zooming camera, the tiny cabin, and ash freaking out at his possesed girlfriend sitting crosslegged and laughing demonically. those were the good old days

It's definitely a classic, not to mention one of Carpenter's best. Also check out his remake of The Thing. That and Dawn of the Dead are my two favorite horror movies. Prince of Darkness and In the Mouth of Madness are good too.

The Fog is a great movie! Used to be shown on TV every year in Cincinnati (Spectre might remember). Prince of Darkness will have you scared.

Rented The Fog about 3 weeks ago and liked it much better than the 1st time I saw it about 10 years ago. Only thing wrong is the aspect ratio, in some scenes everything is out of proportion., but other than that, loved it.

"The Fog" is one of my favorites, and it's also one of Carpenter's best films.
John Carpenter is one of my favorite directors, and he directs the film with a great scary atmosphere.
The cast is excellent, Hal Holbrook, Jamie Lee Curtis, Tom Atkins, Adrienne Barbeau, Janet Leigh, and Nancy Loomis all in the same film!
Carpenter's music score is also chilling and haunting, as well.

"Honestly, could never figure out what people saw in that movie. The Fog bored me to tears!"--Jason
It is funny how individuals react to some horror movies. I remember seeing 'Halloween' soon after it first came out because it had gotten such critical raves. And it did absolutely NOTHING for me! I mean, I saw almost every scare coming from miles away. Carpenter seemed to telegraph every shot so that nothing surprised me. (Except for that one scene when Jamie Lee was standing in a doorway and Michael's white face just suddenly slid into focus!) Next came 'The Fog' and the critics didn't like it much so I went in with no expectations. So I was surprised by how atmospheric and suspenseful I found it. Maybe the key was that I had no expectations beforehand. Well, to each his own, I guess. That's why I never criticize what others like since we each have our individual tastes.

I saw "The Fog" when it came out in the thatres and was scared to death, though I was only ten or eleven at the time. Since then, I've only seen it on TNT a couple of times. Is there a significant difference between the tv version and the videotape version? Cause I remember it as being more scary and slightly more violent than what they show on TNT.

yeah, there is a little bit more blood i guess, but overall you are pretty much getting the same atmosphere. its still worth owning though, as the commercial breaks might kinda mess up the atmosphere

Creeping Death,
I haven't seen TNT's cut, but I'm having a hard time imagining just what they could cut from it. Really, for being a horror film, it was rather tame with its violence and gore. But I think that really fit into the whole "ghost story" feel that Carpenter was going for, and which made it a great success.
