I mentioned this list in an earlier posting below and I've been wondering who has seen these movies and do they agree on the disturbance rating. This list isn't in any particular order, by the way.

I got this from a book of essays called 'CUT! Horror Writers on Horror Film', by Stanley Wiater, in which a chapter named the 13 most disturbing horror movies ever made.

> 1. Salo, 100 Days of Sodom
> 2. Man Behind the Sun
> 3. I Spit on Your Grave (own this one)
> 4. Bloodsucking Freaks
> 5. Last House on the Left (I've seen this one)
> 6. Maniac (own this one too)
> 7. Cannibal Holocaust
> 8. In a Glass Cage
> 9. Nekromantic
> 10. Combat Shock
> 11. Eraserhead
> 12. Ilsa, She-Wolf of the SS
> 13. Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (another one I have)

> > 1. Salo, 100 Days of Sodom

Haven't seen this one and don't think I want to after hearing all the stuff about it.

> > 2. Man Behind the Sun

I haven't gotten around to seeing it yet but I will one of these days.

> > 3. I Spit on Your Grave (own this one)

Pretty disturbing but fun (yes fun) in the end when the woman exacts her revenge. The castration scene is classick!

> > 4. Bloodsucking Freaks

Total garbage. This movie sucks and is not disturbing in the least. It's sort of atwisted black comedy like The Toxic Avenger only B.F. is downright unwatchable.

> > 5. Last House on the Left (I've seen this one)

Pretty good gritty little flick. Don't know if it'd belong on this list since it's pretty tame by today's standards.

> > 6. Maniac (own this one too)

Good...no...great film! Joe Spinnel gives a wonderful performance. Savini's fx are outstanding!

> > 7. Cannibal Holocaust

YES! An extremely disturbing little kick-to-the-crotch kinda film. Despite this, I really loved the movie.

> > 8. In a Glass Cage

I've heard a lot about this one, and I have absolutely no desire to see it (even moreso than Salo). This movie sounds downright repulsive.

> > 9. Nekromantic

I've seen Jorg Buttgereit's 1993 flick called Schramm and after that travesty I have no desire to seek out any more films by Buttgereit or anymore German filmmakers for that matter. Schramm definitely belongs on this list I know that for sure.

> > 10. Combat Shock

Pretty heavy stuff. This one took a coupla viewings for me to finally finish.

> > 11. Eraserhead

Absolutely terrible. This movie is unwatchable garbage and is not disturbing in the least, but it does make for a f*cked up viewing experience.

> > 12. Ilsa, She-Wolf of the SS

Have not seen any of the Ilsa titles but I'll get around to it one of these days.

> > 13. Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (another one I have)

Not bad. Deserves to be on here, if not for the scene where Henry and his partner rape a woman (correct me if I'm wrong it's been a while) and record her on videotape.

Yeah, In Henry they DO put her on videotape, after Henry breaks her son's neck in a strangle hold and kills someone else too.

Tom Towles (Harry Cooper in the 1990 Night Of The Living Dead) was his accomplice, and the one who raped the woman, after which he snaps her neck too.

"Last House On The Left" was directed by porn director Fred Lincoln, and I think it starred his real life leading lady, porn actress Tiffany Clark.

You're right, kinda' tame by today's standards, kind of like "House By The Lake" with Brenda Vaccaro, which is along the same lines.

"I Spit On Your Grave". I wonder if Lorena Bobbitt saw this before she went ahead and made "short work" of her hubby (ha ha ha!)

Good shock value and a lesson to never underestimate the power of a woman in any way shape or form. (Trust me, I've been married for 3 years.....)

Maniac was cool! Saw that in the theatres when I was a lad of 17 or 18, and really became aware of Tom Savini's skill as an FX artist. Don't sell him short!

I liked him a lot after seeing this one, and even MORE after the other 2 "DEAD" movies.

I haven't seen the other films on the list, but one day maybe. Just wanted to let you guys know what I think and wish you all happy viewing!

See ya' soon,
Shawnster

I agree with Newbie on this one. It's not disturbing in the least. It's definitely in poor taste, especially considering it's meant to be funny. However, it's too over-the-top to disturb. I can see where women might get offended by it, but it isn't likely. My grandmother actually watched it with me, and she just laughed at it. For the record, I thought it was a lousy, little flick. Trash cinema buffs should love it, but I just couldn't get into it. I ended up selling it to a friend who, in turn, didn't like it either.

> > 5. Last House on the Left (I've seen this one)

I bought the R version on the Vestron label, but I didn't care for it. It was pretty disturbing though, and I can definitely see why Wes disowned it. I'm not sure what's in the unrated version but, in the version I had, the camera kept cutting away during most of the more disturbing scenes. Nevertheless, it was all a bit too realistic for me. I guess that's what makes the films so disturbing, but it just didn't appeal to me. Again, I sold it to someone who didn't like it either. For the record, MGM just re-released the R version as part of their $9.99 Movie Time collection.

> > 6. Maniac (own this one too)

This one's actually a pretty good, little film. Spinell did a good job as the moaning psychopath, the effects were great, and the gritty noir cinematography was primarily responsible for the film's atmosphere. It's not your routine slash-by-numbers film, so don't expect Friday the 13th when you watch it. I'm not a big Lustig fan, but I did enjoy the film. It's worth seeing. And, for the record, I didn't think it was sufficiently harsh for Tom Savini to have disowned the film. It wasn't any worse than Silence of the Lambs.

> > 7. Cannibal Holocaust

I refuse to watch this one just on general principles.

> > 9. Nekromantic

Haven't seen it. Don't really have any desire to either.

> > 13. Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (another one I have)

I thought this one sucked. I found it boring, predictable, and poorly written. It's not that Rooker did a good job or a bad job with the part. He simply doesn't act at all. For the most part, he just stands around looking bored and clueless. Towles and the girl (can't remember her name) were convincing but Rooker wasn't. And while it is disturbing to think that there could be people like Henry out there among the normal, I just didn't find the movie entertaining. As with the other two films, I sold it. The guy who bought it from me ended up doing the same.
