I just saw the Anchor Bay/collector's edition of Argento's Inferno, and I was wondering if someone could help clarify some things. The interview with Argento and Bava answered some of my questions, but not all.

Okay, there are 3 mothers: one in Rome, one in New York, and one in Freiburg (presumably the witch from Suspiria).

1. So who was it that killed Carlo and the blonde woman? Did the Tenebrarum mother travel from New York to Italy to kill them, or was it supposed to be the mother in Italy?

2. Who was the butcher that killed the antique bookstore owner? The only time he appeared was during the murder. Nothing more was shown of him, and his connection to New York mother was never explained.

3. Is there a third film that deals with the mother in Italy, or has Argento yet to finish the trilogy?

That's all.

Gee I'd like to answer questions 2 and 3 but this movie is pretty damn confusing! I don't really understand it either, and I'm sure most people don't. As for question #3 there IS in fact a 3rd film in the Three Mother's Trilogy but it's an unofficial sequel called "The Black Cat" (1988 i think) and it's directed by Luigi Cozzi. But like I said it's an unofficial sequel so really, the Three Mother's Trilogy (at least the way Argento visioned) has yet to be completed. You can catch "The Black Cat" on sci-fi channel every now and then that's where I saw it. I was shocked to watch an Italian horror film on TV! The movie is pretty decent but you can tell that it's only a half-a**ed attempt to finish two of Argento's greatest works (mainly becuz Luigi Cozzi is not that good a director as Argento).

We can assume it was Mater Lachrymarum ("the most beautiful of the three") Was that her at the music class? Hmmm.....

Remember that these murders are not always committed by the Mothers themselves. Remember the blind man killed by his own dog in Suspiria? The opening of Inferno mentions the evil spreads from the house, so much that there will be a foul stench in the air.

Still, it's best not to try to make a lot of sense out of either of those movies, and just enjoy the ride
