I too went and watched BWP and have to say, I found the Sci Fi channel's documentary on it much more frightening. The only time I felt a true sense of horror in the theater was when they discovered the bundle with what I am assuming is Victim no. 1's tongue in it and at the end when Heather was facing the wall.
I was however pleasantly surprised by The Sixth Sense. I dreaded going to see it as Bruce Willis was one of the cast, but I found myself shivering and shaking in the deserted theater when the dead made their appearances. That movie was almost as hyped as BWP, yet didnt fall short of said hype, in my eyes.
Maybe the difference is all in how you perceive your "horror"?

my problem with BWP was not the movie but the hype surrounding the movie. In general everyone who went to see it was all hyped up and I had to tell people that it wasn't real so there expectations weren't that high. Most people I know have seen the movie and hated it some have even said it is the worst movie theve seen, but I on the other hand didn't give in to the hype and went to see a good scary movie which with the atmosphere and lack of a central visible villian the movie really creaped me out. It was more real life than any other scary movies i've seen lately, because there doesn't have to be any unnatural, super human villian it could be victem #1 or just some back wood freak killing them and setting up the stones and stick figures. I thought the scariest things in the movie were the stick figures, the hand prints on the wall and the guy standing in the corner at the end. The only bad parts for me were the fact that though the one lady seen what appeared to be the tongue she still went towards her friend screaming for help and the fact that they were too stupid to just follow the river out of there, either one of those things explained and the movie would be almost a 10 but i say give it a 8 for creapiness.

it is definately perception, becasue even though i really liked the sixth sense, i wouldn't even call it a full blown horror movie. it was really more of a supernatural drama/thriller. the only scary scenes were the ghost scenes, and they were little more than the usual boo! shock/surprise type scares rather than actual fear.
