Hey kids, just interested in hearing your thoughts on the wonderful director from Canada. Favorite films of his? Not so favorites? Who is David Cronenberg?

I've seen lamentably little Cronenberg. Well, I guess not so lamentably for me if all of his movies are similar to Videodrome.
I'll never understand how I could hate a movie with James Woods and Deborah Harry so much. It was really awesome and creepy at the beginning, then it just turned into an incoherent acid trip at the end.

His best movie in my opinion is Dead Ringers. It stars Jeremy Irons in a dual role as twin gynecologists. Calico doesn't normally like his movies either, but ended up loving this movie. I am a fan of his work, but do believe it is not for everyone. His remake of the Fly was probably one of the best remakes that has ever come out. Now that's how you do it Hollywood.
Eastern Promises was really good, but felt that when it ended that there should have been alot more to it. It didn't really wrap up as good as I thought. It was kind of an abrupt ending. |

I was later in life talked into seeing Dead Ringers. I was preparing for the headache, but, by the end, I was touched in a way that I never expected. Usually you find that a Director sticks with one or two genres in their career... not the case at all with him. I've never seen so many completely different movies under one persons' resume.
I still have M. Butterfly that I keep meaning to watch.. maybe it's time!
So, yeah, definitely my favorite is Dead Ringers. The Fly and The Brood coming in second. Least favorite, I have to go with Naked Lunch. Just because I didn't know what the hell was going on! |

I love anything by Cronenberg. His early work (Rabid, Shivers) through A History of Violence. My faves are definitely The Fly, Dead Ringers, Spider, and The Brood, but I can't really say I dislike really anything he did. The Dead Zone was probably his most mainstream and eXistenZ was surprisingly "normal" for him, but even they were entertaining.
Way back when I was dating this girl that loved movies as much as me, but I was always the kind gentleman and let her pick which movies we would go see. Well, one time she told me that I HAD to go pick the film that evening and I immediately jumped at the chance to see Cronenberg's latest film - Naked Lunch. While I loved the completely strangeness of it all, I guess she didn't. I never got to pick a film again. 
The one that I found very disturbing was actually Crash. I don't know what it is about that film (I personally do not have any fetish for car crashes), but it was just unsettling to me.
Besides, you got to love a director that it willing to play a crazy killer in Clive Barker's Nightbreed.  |

Cronenberg is hands down one of my favorite directors. He's such an original. He really knows how to get under your skin and creep people out. My personal faves are: The Brood, Shivers, The Fly, Scanners, Videodrome, and Dead Ringers. I haven't been AS into him since Spider, but still enjoy his films.
The only one I've seen that I absolutely hated was Crash. |

I made my family watch The Brood this summer. When old girl lifted her skirt in the end I thought my husband was going to hurl.

LoL...I guess that David's mission was accomplished yet again, Daphne. I just remember i was never allowed to see Videodrome in its entirety until i was like 17, and then i was always into his films. Each time, i would pick up the video box and say "Ehh, this doesnt sound too interesting" and then it ends up being a great film. I love almost all of Cronenberg's films too, and i definitely have him in the top 5 greatest directors, although the only film that i know of his that i didnt enjoy was Camera. I give the guy some leeway on it after the string of notables that he has produced.
I feel that Cronenberg succeeds so well because he always adds a little psychology to the mix. He doesnt just screw with your eyes like a lot of directors, he screws with your head too (see Videodrome for a literal meaning). The psychological piece makes for a different angle on his films and gives all of the other pieces in his films more oomph. After i saw Videodrome, my next film was Scanners...5 minutes in and Poppa had a brand new bag. Hope he continues more great chills.
