I'm not sure if you heard, it must have been around 2002, Glory committed suicide. (I'm sorry if this brings up bad memories for anyone..)
We were all shocked and saddened. I think this was around the time Severe Sinema started after Casey had shut down. |

We also lost Marcia to a heart attack a few years back. |

Wow! Please forgive my lapse in memory gang, but some of the people that are on those lists, i dont remember. I do remember Glory (R.I.P.), Ghost, AuntieM, CD, and a few others. (KK covers his face with his hands) I cant believe how messed i was back then...1998-2003 were not good years for me at all. It sometimes seems like a fog when i think back on it. It was nice to see where a lot of them came from, and it was at a time when The Cabinet was blowing up. I miss those times.
Ya know, sometimes it makes me really think about this place and what a gift it was to find this place. I guess i was here since 1998 if i was ready to celebrate my two years on one of those posts. When i found this place i was just getting started on WebTV and i was looking at horror to get at the video store, when i stumbled across The Cabinet. I was goth, and so was my then-girlfriend, the one that you met, Tom. She was a real piece of work.
Its sometimes sad to say but at the time i started on here, my whole life was falling apart and i was too. This board became a creative outlet for me to put my problems and to forget about them. A lot of the people on this board, back then, and now, were more of a friend than the ones that bailed out on me when i was really in need of them. I hope to someday tell a little more about that on the Lit Board someday. It would make for an interesting read.

Tom, Marcia slipped my mind. May her and Glory rest in peace. The great thing about the board being reopened and being able to read all these old posts, is that we can relive the memories that they gave us.
KK, I miss the times too. Life goes on and things change, but it will forever remain in my heart as a great time in my life.
I guess this is why I really hope the convention next year happens and we can get more people together. I would love to toast to old times and the memories of lost great friends. |

| When the Casey board was in it's prime, there really WAS a dearth of decent horror movies. That was around the time of Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, etc. Since then, it's got a lot better in my opinion. Yeah, there's the proliferation of stupid remakes, but if you ignore 90% of the American releases, there's some good stuff coming out. Off the top of my head: Inside, Grindhouse, Martyrs, Drag Me to Hell, and Eden Lake are all worth seeing. Like any other period of time, you've gotta wade through the crap to get to the good stuff, but there's a lot more good stuff lately then back in the 90's! |

Rob, I'm going to have to disagree with you about the films recently. I do not believe that the films are of all that good quality or originality. Scream for one was a patchwork quilt of many horror movies wrapped into one. I dont think that at that time was when there was a plethora of watchable movies, I just think that it was a time when horror was hitting the mainstream for the "Tween" generation. Their version of horror was all ripoffs and remakes to us.
I am definitely going to agree with you about the US films in particular. Most of the best films came from outside of the US at that time, and were missed by a lot of us here in the US. I for one did not see Inside or Eden Lake until a few months ago and i loved both of them. They were actually made a few years too. High Tension was another of my favorites and probably my favorite remake that i have seen in a long time (although i usually dont watch them). i also agree that when you wade through the junk there are a few gems, but speaking from my experience, i feel that there are less and less gems. Who knows, maybe the US will rebound and stop the remakes? |

Er...it sounds like we ARE pretty much in agreement, KK. I'm saying I think there have been some pretty good horror movies made recently, especially compared to the time frame Calico referred to in her original post. Think about it. What good horror movies came out of the 90's? Exorcist 3? One or two others maybe? I'm as sick of the remake trend as the next guy, but the past 10 years have also produced some of my favorites. Audition, Three Extremes, and The Descent are three more I just thought of.
High Tension was a remake? |

Yeah, it was unfortunately, and i just found out about that only in the last 3 months. I was upset that i even bought after, but you know what...i really liked it, probably because it went from the US to France of all places to be remade.
The film was a remake of the 1997 made-for-tv movie "Intensity" starring John C. McGinley and Molly Parker, which was based on the book by Dean Koontz. Personally, i went with High Tension as the better because of, here's stupid....there werent any commericals. Also, High Tension was about 20 notches above Intensity in the gore department. Ewwwww.
Also, thank you for clarifying your position, i will make a note to myself to stop posting after 2am.

I suppose you guys are right. When I think of 90's horror, I think of the death of franchises, Scream and the plethora of ripoffs that ensued. As a "tween" growing up around that time, I even hated it then and still retreated to the 80's.
I don't like saying it, but I guess this past decade has been better for horror. More frustrating than ever with the remakes, luring dtv covers and pg-13, but admittedly, BETTER THAN THE 90'S. |

When all looks dire and there seems to be no hope, just keep repeating the mantra, "It's better than in the 90's....It's better than in the 90's".
It's probably an age thing, but although there were some very good horror movies to come out of the 80's, I've always considered the 70's to be the best decade for them. I definitely own more 70's dvd's than 80's dvd's. |

Believe it or not, it actually was not - that is according to Aja and/or the credits of the film. I know because I watched the film and immediately thought, "Hey, this is Intensity! I didn't know that it was ever remade," and then proceeded to scan the credits for any mention of Dean Koontz and found none... nor of the TV-movie adaptation. So the two films have nothing to do with one another, aside from some "similarities." I have no clue why Koontz did not sue.
That said, I agree - High Tension was better.  |

100% agree. The 70s is a golden age of horror in both films and TV-movies. The 80s weren't bad because they followed the path that the previous decade made, but took it to the point of absurdity, which led to the 90s... and Scream.  |

Ha! Ten years later and we're STILL bitching about that movie.
Deservedly so. 
The 80's were OK. We got Re-animator, Day of the Dead, Demons, and a slew of others. On the other hand, they sure did get stuck on the slasher genre, didn't they? And the day-glo colors were rather distracting. It was like half the movies were trying to look like Miami Vice. And don't get me started on the cheesy synth scores! I'll say it again: there were quite a few good movies to come out of the 80's. But I think the "dumbing down" of popular culture can be traced back to the 80's as well. |
