Blu-Ray players are pretty cheap now, but the movies themselves are still ridiculous. I'm in the process of moving right now, and when we do, that's when we'll get a digital tv (yes...I still have the old-fashioned kind as of now). Maybe then I'll consider checking out the difference between Blu-Ray and dvd. But still...do I really WANT to see a digitally perfect version of TCM? Or Evil Dead? Or I Drink Your Blood? Or even The Godfather?

Guess I'm kind of a Luddite, eh?

Last seen: Mario Bava's Black Sabbath.

I've loved this movie since way back, but I'm not sure about the new and improved version. Apparently they used the Italian print that, although uncensored and has the stories in the correct order, also has Italian dubbing with English subtitles...when the movie was recorded in English in the first place! Doesn't make a lot of sense.

Hell of the Living Dead directed by the late great Bruno Mattei, or as he went by for this movie, Vincent Dawn. It begins with an accident at some sort of chemical factory located in New Guinea. You know some sort of chemical is leaking out, because when the guy turns the knob on his device the dial goes into the red. He then finds a dead rat that is somehow reanimated by the green gas leaking out. It gets under his mask and proceeds to dine on him, which in turns him into a zombie. It then escelates from there...
Cut to a stand off between police and a group holding hostages inside the American Consulate. The police then send in an elite force dressed in the most riduculous bright blue uniforms I have ever seen. Wait a minute... I've seen this movie... If you haven't guessed by now, it's a total rip off of Dawn of the Dead, right down to using the exact same music Goblin did originally for Dawn.
Somehow after all this they get dumped in the jungle of New Guinea on some sort of mission. They hook up with a couple of reporters who had just been attacked by zombies with the bluest faces I have seen yet for zombies. At least they are easy to tell from the humans. Well, that and the fact that they are the slowest zombies I have seen. They don't even attack very well. At one point one of the elite squad members runs into a group of them and taunts them. They even have a hold of him at one point and can't seem to bite him. Also, when the main woman is being attacked by zombie priest she backs up to a blackboard and just stands there with her eyes bugged out not even screaming. Plus, I don't know how many times they keep having to remind each other to shoot the zombies in the head, but they keep unloading into their chests. They never seemed to run out of ammo though.
They continue on through the jungle, which mysteriously looks like stock footage. They happen upon some tribal drum playing, but somehow the woman reporter happens to know them, seeing as how by coincidence she had spent a year living them. She opens her shirt in a nice closeup to reveal her breasts and tells the men she is going on ahead to the village and to give her an hour. I about pissed myself as she made her way through the village of stock footage and reaction to what she was seeing. Then a group of grainy natives came slowly towards her as she just stood there. They had these massive masks on their heads that looked like it took them many hours to make, but when one native comes into the frame with her he is wearing a horrible mockup of one of the masks that looked like a kindergarten art project.
The movie continues with many more slow encounters with the zombies and an ultimate showdown at a house where one of the "elite" squad knowing that any moment the zombies could attack, proceeds to put on a tutu, grab a cane and dance around humming "Singin' in the Rain." Surprisingly he is devoured by the zombies. Not sure how they caught him those awesome moves he was busting out.
Then they travel down the beach to a boat that was placed there by who knows, but was going to be there for them. At the end of the movie they end up at the factory where it all begins and the woman going on about how they were making a chemical there to get rid of the weak people by having them eat eachother? HUH?
I give this one 2 of 2 bug eyes...
Can't wait for another of his masterpieces to come later this week. Rats: Night of Terror.

I watched Hell of the Living Dead way back in the original Casey Days when I was first introduced to Italian horror films. Terrible movie. I'm glad it wasn't my FIRST spaghetti horror, or I might've been inclined to not pursue them any further.

Btw....pardon my ignorance, but are you and Calico married or together? Just wondering. Just like to know who's who.

The last "horror" movie I saw was Orphan, which I liked but wasn't necessarily horror even though they advertised it as such. Still waiting for a great horror movie to hit the theaters. The Collector was crap.

Now yet i don't have any blue-ray player, so i watched the DVD only. It is undoubted blue-ray is better, but I enjoyed the DVD.

Yeah. They really seemed to shy away from making that film scary. There is only one, maybe two moments in the movie that actually come close to causing shock. The whole missing kid storyline should have disturbed me, but the way it was presented didn't really make me feel the kid was in any danger. I was ultimately wrong, but the whole thing was moot by that point anyhow.

I watched the Friday the 13th and Last House on the Left remakes late last night. I liked that the new Jason used strategy with booby traps and using wounded victims as bait. The burning sleeping bag bit was cool and so not in line with what the original Jason would do that it grabbed my interest. Though just like the rushed ending of that particular death, the film didn't live up to the potential it displayed at moments. It wasn't brilliant by any means, but was better than most F13 sequels.

The Last House on the Left remake kicked ass... except for the microwave thing. The characters and their actions felt pretty natural up until that scene, which felt forced and silly in comparison to what led up to it. It was the thing that turned me off when I saw the trailer for the movie too. WHo the hell shows something from the last minute of a movie in its trailer anyway? Despite the awful ending, the remake completely trounces the original. The events of the remake seemed to flow in a natural progression, with the characters generally doing things that made sense, up until the final confrontation with Krug. Considering it had less of a body count than the original, it also managed to be more suspenseful.

I'm glad you liked the Last House remake, Tom. I agree with the microwave part. I thought it was ridiculous. It didn't fit the other acts at all and was, even though touted in the trailer, the least brutal killing of them all.

Other than that, I clapped at the end. Well.. after the credits.. when I was the only one left in the theater.

Does Dance Flick count as horror? *SHIVERS*
