So, what have you seen lately? Did it blow? Do you want to warn people against it? Did you love it? New or old, let's have it..
The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Gave
Besides having quite possibly the longest name i've ever seen, this one also happens to be the only movie that i've seen that plays to the anyone with a fetish for beautiful women with red hair.
Alan recently lost his red haired wife, Evelyn, whom he believed was cheating on him. With this free time these days, he goes about town finding beautiful women, with red hair of course, to bring back to his castle and kill. Honestly, this isn't giving anything away. The story is so convoluted that I could tell you he makes them wear only thigh high boots and whips them and I would barely be scratching the surface.
For a 1971 Giallo, it has its fair share of nudity. If you mix an Argento/Fulci Giallo with, oh let's say Bloodsucking Freaks, this is what you would get. It has its quirks. There's the fact that it's supposed to be set in England, but no one has an accent and cars drive on the wrong side of the road. There's a woman, who is no older than 30, who was apparently put in a wheel chair to appear old. But it's things like this that make movies like this so special. There's nothing like them anymore. If you're a red head lover, or just looking for something new that you've never seen, I would give it a shot. |

I have that movie as part of one of those cheap multi-movie DVD sets. I'm sure I played it in the background at some point but recall nothing about it... and I have a fetish for red hair.
My most recent horror film was The Orphanage. It was visually pleasing to look at and maintained a decent pace, but it really wasn't scary on any level. The only shock/disturb moment for me was something that had to do with a woman getting hit by a car, far from the haunted orphanage. The haunting itself didn't feel very threatening or spooky. It was more like a fairy tale. |

You have to check it out, Tom. You'll love it. The red head and the beginning is particularly "nice"....
Oh, I know which scene you're talking about.. It worked, but it felt awfully out of place, didn't it? I was at an opening screening with the Director and Writer and they kept stressing that it wasn't your average "horror movie". It did catch the eye of Guillermo though, which is why it was a "Presents" movie. Hey, that makes it not half bad already right? Funny enough, when they were doing a Q&A at the end of the screening, one person asked what there thoughts were of a Remake. Half the theater booed! They weren't too keen on it, but I swear i've heard rumors of there being one in production.. Who knows. |

Alright. I'll bite again.
I was in the mood for pure cheese last night, so I rented The Messengers 2 from Redbox. bwuahahaha.
The only reason I can think of that warranted an R Rating, is the completely out of place scene of a woman walking by a cornfield and stopping to undress and pour water down her naked body.
Ehh.. I can't say it was any worse than the first, though. |

Total cheese is an understatement.
So, if a Scarecrow attracts hot women, guess what I'm putting in my front yard. A scarecrow and a lawn sprinkler. O and remember, when being chased by a scarecrow, run to the other side of the tractor, he'll never find you there.
It kind of reminded me of Dead Tone.. |

That's off the hook!
My wife keeps watching Mama Mia! over and over. Does that count as a horror film? I actually like Abba, but I find that film an attrocity. It lures you in with the cute girl on the DVD cover and then the film is primarily about old folks. It's like watching your parents do Abba karoake all night long with their friends. I used to think Pierce Brosnan was cool. He has been ruined for me. How the hell was he cast in a singing role? Did anyone actually have him do a singing audition prior to hiring him in the role? He causes physical pain and revulsion with his vocals. Then the ending where they all come out wearing tassled spandex jumpsuits! The horror! The horror! |

Let's talk about the classic we watched last night "La noche del terror ciego" or "Tombs of the Blind Dead" or as the producers called it while trying to capitalize on the success of "Planet of the Apes" "Revenge from Planet Ape" or as I like to call it "Remember those great times we had in school?"
The movie begins with Knights on horseback riding back to their castle with the catch of the day, a young woman. They proceed to tie her to some posts and strip her doen to her undergarments, for some reason not nude, which seems to be a trend in this movie, NO NUDITY! Then a couple of King Arthur's Knights or as we find out later, Templars, ride back and forth "cutting" her with their swords. Then the entire group of Templars as part of their "blood" ritual proceed to I'm guessing, drink her blood.
Cut to Present day 1971... 2 women who seem to have some mysterious past meet again at a resort. They alude to something that happened to them while in school and the "great" times that they had in school together. Boyfriend of 1st girl comes out of pool and invites girl 2 to go with them camping. They meet the next morning and go on an old steam train that girl 1 jumps off of, which wasn't too hard because it was goin like 10 miles an hour, and wanders off towards some ruins. Oddly, the train doesn't stop and her friends don't even follow, they just yell at her and continue on their way.
So... 1st girl proceeds to the ruins and decides to camp for the night. She makes a nice fire out of a few twigs that miraculously burns for hours, lays out her sleeping bag, which seems to be the only one that anyone brought on this "camping" trip and listens to music and reads. After deciding to call it a night, all of a sudden the Templars make their appearance. The funny part of this is that move in slow motion, no matter where they go. They ride their horses in slow motion, walk in slow motion you name it. Not sure why 1st girl had so much trouble getting away. Maybe because she decides to ride 1 of their slow motion horses.
Anyway, the 2 friends who camped out at the latest hotel, decide to go find what happened to their friend that jumped the train the night before.
I really don't want to give anymore of the movie, so let's just say alot of improbable things happen, and you don't want to fuck with the undead Templars.
Also, as an aside, you won't believe what happened to them back in school. Let's just say it involves some hair brushing and a magazine. I was speechless.
Well on Dead Tone scale, Dead Tone being the greatest ever, and Mama Mia! being the worst I give it a 5. |

Before I give my review on this let's just see what Netflix has to say so you can all see what drew me into this film - When three young women crash their car and wake up in a mysterious old mansion, they can't fathom the terror in store for them. Taken in by a spinster and her demented mother, they soon find themselves caught in an unrelenting web of sexual repression and savage brutality. Graphic violence and nudity initially caused the English Parliament to ban this film in 1985, but now it's back -- in its original format and loaded with special features.
Ok... Sounds good doesn't it? I mean it says banned for graphic violence and nudity! Two things that go great together! Well let's just say that there was some pretty sad looking tits that were only on screen for a few minutes, one of the scenes being when 2 of the women had just finished talking about the feeling of being watched, so they decide to shower together. Huh?!?
Well, the story begins with the 3 friends traveling off to I'm guessing the middle of nowhere for this supposed concert. The road they take winds through the woods, with every shot from above be accompanied by ominous electronic music, which I can only think was composed by the poor man's Vangelis. Suddenly, out of nowhere they run over a branch and end up in a ditch. When one of the women wake up, she is being hovered over by a man who looks like Tom Savini and one of the ugliest women ever. Great looking couple... So the women become guests in this house where a man hating crazy old lady and the ugly lady, which is her daughter live. We know that the old lady is crazy, because during dinner she takes to staring at her dipping cups. I began to wonder if she ran out of ketchup for her fries, now that would be scary! Also during dinner, she kept talking about the past and what had happened. Something about her ex husband doing something with a minor and the shame that her family endured. Not reall sure if that's right seeing as how flashbacks were definitly not in the budget for this film. Talking is what's in the budget though. Lots and lots of talking...
Another thing that I thought was interesting is that one of the three friends was hurt worse than the others, but I think it took 2 days for the other two girls to finally check on her. Wow! Some friends.
This movie just continues to go from bad to worse. The violence was pretty non-existent and the nudity, as I previously stated is not worth wasting film on.
By the time it got to the big reveal ending I was so bored by the talking I'm not really sure what happened. I was more enthralled with the fact that my projector needed cleaning..... |

New Years Evil (1980)
I remembered this movie fondly from years ago and decided to pop my crappy ex-rental vhs in last night. (Let me tell you.. there's nothing like a really dark, on its last leg vhs on an 87" hd projection screen. Also an added treat is that my vcr likes to go in and out of Hi-Fi) Any way! Where the hell is the dvd release and why did I not realize 10 years ago when I was collecting every single vhs new and exrental that one day the quality would go to hell? I swore when the "dvd craze" hit I wouldn't buy everything I had already on tape. Well years later, I did. Everything that was available, at least. Now it's Blu Ray. I freaking swear. I've owned some movies in all three different generations and it pisses me off. I'm sure in another 10 years it'll be something else.
Alright alright.. the movie.. that's right. It's still as good as I remember. The device the killer uses to mask his real voice is a little laughable and the acting is over the top, but all in all, it's a enjoyable dark little movie. Anyone else like this one? |

| Not sure if it was more dark in feel or just dark because of the old vhs it was on. It was funny how he got the girl at the 70's disco bar to go with him to party because it was at Erik Estrada's. The killer sounded more like he had throat cancer and had to use one of the talking devices you would hold up to the hole in your neck. Also, not sure why the new wave punk band was playing classic blues rock at one point, but it is funny to see the audience kind of swaying around like zombies during it. |

Blu-Ray is just another scheme to part us from our hard-earned money. I'll buy a Blu-Ray player only when dvd's are no longer available. I'm holding out 'til then.
Last seen: Blood-Sucking Freaks. I'm sure it was pretty shocking back in it's day, but it's just hilarious now! Loved it. |

| I thought it was a scheme too until I saw the difference. The difference between the dvd release and the cleaned up transfer to blu-ray of the original Halloween is astounding. |

| That's what I understand...and I'm sure you're right. It's just the thought of having to switch over to a new format again that p's me off. Besides, the majority of movies I like are supposed to look kind of grainy. But, get back to me in another few years, and I'm sure I'll have Blu-Ray like everyone else. |

| Well if the studios do the transfer right, the movies that are supposed to have grainy look will still have the grainy look. 300 is a good example of that. The film makers intended it to have that slightly grainy feel to it and it is still there in the transfer. Still, people complain that they don't like that in it, but if it is the way the original director wanted than that's how I would want to see it. |

I don't know.. I can really see where Rob is coming from. Because I had so many freaking vhs back in the day, I would claim that my vhs were fine when dvd was becoming really popular. I didn't care about perfect quality. In all honesty you can tell a big difference in a lot of Blu Ray compared to dvd, like Halloween. Everything is just vibrant. If you don't have perfect eyesight though, or if you really don't care to have things crystal clear, dvd is still perfectly fine and more affordable than ever!
The quality of Blu discs are getting better as time goes on also. The first Blu Ray I got was American Psycho. After watching some of it, I claimed there was no difference. It wasn't until I watched a scene back to back that I saw the difference. There was no blurriness around images.. It was just.. clear. I think I was expecting too much. Or maybe it was the fact that, like you said Rob, the movies I was used to watching weren't perfect quality and I didn't need them to be. So, in that regard, i'm a little bias. Any way, if you can't afford it, to ME any way, it's not the be all end all. It is nice though.
If you do want a clearer picture and a little better sound though, everything Blu Ray is coming WAY down in price than it was 2 years ago and i'm sure will keep coming down. Where as 2 years ago you paid $600 for a Blu Ray (or PS3 like I have) you can get a player now for $200 or a PS3 WITH GAMES for $400. Movies are still more than I would like them to be but i'm hoping like dvd's when they were first beginning, will come down in price. |
