I have noticed recently that there is alot more horror movies coming to the theater in the next few months than I have seen in a long time. There is always plenty that go direct to video, but not to the theater. I'm wondering why the sudden upsurge. Is it a new trend or just a fluke. I'm not complaining, unless in some way they all suck.
Here is the list of movies I have found.
First off we have Grace http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1220213/ sounds interesting enough but with a limited release more people will probably see on video than theater.
Halloween 2 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1311067/
Ugh... more whining than a normal human should endure...
The Final Destination http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1144884/
In 3D no less. Gimmicky or actually add to the film? Hopefully we will have more than just things coming at us like a yoyo in Friday the 13th 3.
Carriers http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0806203/
Hmm.. another plague movie.. Hopefully its not just the earth trying to kill us ala "The Happening." Maybe its the swine flu?
Sorority Row http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1232783/
Another remake. "House on Sorority Row" being the original.
Jennifer's Body http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1131734/
Only reason to see is Megan Fox, but honestly she is a little strange looking.
Next up we have Splice http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1017460/ It's directed by Vincenzo Natali, the same person who directed "Cube" so I guess some low budget decent horror.
Then there seems to be a couple of weeks with nothing, then we get
Zombieland http://www.imdb.com/nowplaying/2009/10/9/
The latest entry in the horror comedy genre. Woody Harrelson as a redneck? There's a stretch.
The Stepfather http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0814335/
A remake. 'Nuff said.
Then of course what would Halloween be without this:
Saw VI http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1233227/
Guess I will have to break down and watch 5 so that I know what is going on. Or not. I mean it's about a bunch of people having to get out of some traps or they die, right?
Well that seems to be about it. Let me know if I've missed any. I do love that they kind of stop coming out after Halloween though...

It is odd, isn't it? I'm just thrilled to see some horror in the theater. More than likely, most will be average, but I still get excited to see an "average" horror film on the big screen!

I am so incredibly psyched for Zombieland, I can barely control myself.

Oh, how I love my zombies. And Woody Harrelson.

I couldn't pass this one up. My answer for the surge - The recession. First, horror has always been a relatively low-budget affair with high returns for studios, so watching the bucks means more low-risk (horror) productions. Second, it is a fairly standard trend that there is an increase in audience interest in horror/thriller/fantasy-based movies during times of social turmoil - Escapist entertainment, I guess.

I have been actually quite surprised that it took until late-summer for it all to get going, but you are right. We're about to be overrun by it.

Of course, A Perfect Getaway only had a so-so opening this last weekend, but it really had a poor marketing campaign IMHO.

Welcome to the board, Samson.Real5! Please try in your future posts to use punctuation. It's a little hard to understand what you are trying to say.

I think that's because Simon.Real5 was not so much... real. Clever spam (presumably bot) with keyword repetition and of course... a link to wherever. We've had a few of them lately and I try to get them when I see them.

I agree, Casey...they know that they better start churning out decent films otherwise, who will go? I'm not paying $9 to see crap. I can spend a lot less and see crap. I'm actually excited about the sequel to The Last Starfighter next year. Smile

I'm looking forward to see Orphan, actually.

Thank God for the recession.
