hello friends, non-romans, horrormen. we are gathered here today to discuss what has happened to horror movies. today's horror is not scary and boring, with very few exceptions. what has happened to the good ol' days?i'm sure all hardcore fans miss the 80's slashers. all the 70's and 60's dark freakish films. and let's not forget the classics!but what has happened to our great movie genre disgusts me. bring back our movies!anyone who thinks otherwise is crazy!

Agreed without a second thought!!!

Horror has kind of gone to the dogs, sort of.

I for one wish nothing more than the return of the late-night independent TV stations (pre-cable).

THAT was when you could turn on CH.48 at 11:00 Friday night and see an old b\w "B" movie from the 50's and 60's, or the old classic Hammer horror films.

I guess we just got sold out: The politicians said "Give The People What They Want: Cable".

Now instead of late night horror, we have to deal with Martha Stewart, Ben Stein and Jimmy Kimmel, ect, ect, ect.

Not that I'm knocking cable, but WHY can't somebody dig up the old Chilller and Creature Feature sysndication tapes, and put them on Sci-Fi, or better yet, MAKE A HORROR STATION OF THEIR OWN?

PS: Comcast, Service Electric, and C-Tech; LISTEN UP!!!

If you ask me, the garbage that's on TV TODAY?

THAT'S the REAL Horror!!!

You can't put your arms around a memory, but ain't nobody can stop you from feeling good about the old days!

Keep it alive, man. Preserve the flame!

Peace, brother.

i agree completely, the state of horror right now is just plain sad. nothing comes close to the glory days of the past 30-40+ years. actually id say that the american mainstream film industry ie hollywood is really kinda in poor shape in general. but thats another topic for another board i suppose. but yes, as shawn put it it has really gone to the dogs. its a good thing we still have all these movies to watch that are left over from the golden years

It's not just Hollywood, it's television too. Gone are the Commander USA's Groovie Movies, Mostervisions, and USA Up All Nights. And remember Monsters, Freddy's Nightmares, Werewolf: the Series, Friday the 13th: The Series, Tales From the Crypt, and the '80s Twilight Zone? I tell ya, I really miss the '80s.

About a year ago, I got so fed up with not finding anything on television or in theaters worth seeing, that I just started collecting. I'm up to about 130 movies now, most of which are films I remember from when I was a kid. Others I discovered while collecting.

It's an expenisve hobby, but it keeps me sane. For me, there's no better way to unwind over the weekend, than staying up late and watching the horror movies I grew up with.

Whatever happened to real horror? The NC-17 rating, the death of the independent filmmaker, and Columbine high school...

I'm afraid the glory daze are behind us, but the slasher appears dead and hollyweird is moving towards more "adult" themed flix, which is a good sign (I think/hope), but the real deal is in the past. Thank heaven or hell for video and dvd.

They got romance channels and western channels on satellites but why no horror channels? I think that with the success of movies like Blair Witch, the Scream and I Know What you did last summer type movies that alot of studios are trying to jump on the bandwagon and cash in rather than produce a good scary movie. Hopefully some of the ones coming up in the next couple months will live up to some of the hype and will also fight the system and put out the NC-17 movie and dare theaters to not play it and hopefully people like us will revolt and change some things? Maybe it's just wishfull thinking but I hope Jason X is good and it's NC-17 cuz I know I'll be there at the midnight showing opening night!

AMEN on the 80's Spectre! I miss them TOO!

I was one of the original headbangers; long hair, leather pants, bullet belts, cycle boots, black jeans, you name it!

Every Friday I'd go down to the Airport Music hall in Allentown, PA and see bands like Death Angel, Raven (my favorite,), Saxon, Slayer, the list goes on!

Mosh the night away, I always used to say!

MTV had Headbangers' Ball, TNT'S Monstervision, you name it! Great days!

NC-17 movies SHOULD be allowed in the theatre, as I remember ZOMBIE and Silent Night Deadly Night being kicked out of our theatres after a day or two.

There was this one cool moviehouse in PA that DID show NC-17 films, and I knew the owner real well, and he let me in all the time.

I saw everything from Maniac to Burial Ground there, and remember many people walking out on them in sheer disgust.

I DID tape all the Freddy's Nightmares on TV, and have em' back to back with a Motorhead concert with Slayer as the opener!

Great combination, huh?

Well, it's not really gone as long as you keep it alive in your memory, so let's not forget, and teach to others what we know, and try to make sense of the new Millenium.

Tough job.

See ya' soon,
Shawn H

whatever happened to classic horror? it's alive and well and crouching just outside your bedroom window at three in the morning. you can hear it there, waiting, when the wind dies and the dog is too frightened to have a look.

i don't know about the '80s being known for classic horror -- all those crocigators and allidiles waxing fat in NYC sewers; the too-many swarms of killer bees and army ants, having their way; nightmares on tree street, etc. and jason can go to hell.

me? give me the early stuff, black & white and all that lovely gray matter in-between. a healthy dose of "Shhhh! the Octopus!" on a dark and dreary night, snuggled to the fire, and just a sip of "johnnie alright" -- that's what puts the torque in my knickers. only just don't forget to lock the doors and draw tight the shutters. you know, just in case.

i like derleth and lovecraft and howard. i like "horror hotel" and "the brain eaters." and i like "frankenstein."

anyway, love the website!! and i just love Mlle Morte -- whoever she is! what a GREAT name.

Classic horror has gone the way of Jack Kevorkian's last patient: it flatlined! Since kids with guns and a philandering President became the latest issues society gets to focus on, psycho killers have become the forte in movies. I want one good scare-the-flowers-right-off-my-panties horror film produced since 1998, instead of me having to go back to my old tried and true classics. Not that those are bad, but after a while you want some fresh blood. If anyone can point me in the right direction here, I would love it... but until then, there's my opinion. Sleep well.

"Man the 80's was great with horror movies."

Yea, but where did all the horror movies from the '50s and '60s go? Wouldn't you figure that, what with video and DVD, all of the movies that we remember from the midnight creature features, Elvira and The Ghoul, would be available somewhere? I never thought at the time that I would wind up missing movies such as 'The Monolith Monsters', 'Behemoth!' and 'Attack of the Mushroom People' but I do. No, these are real horror and monster movies. I think it was the movement of slasher movies to the forefront of horror that has sounded the death knell of horror. The movie makers put a lot less thought into their films because it was easier, and cheaper, to give a butcher knife to an actor and call it "horror". Jeez, I'm sounding like an old fuddy-duddy here! Wink

Someone mentioned FOX taking over a favorite tv station. Me too, man!! DEATH TO FOX!! We used to have an independent tv station around here, WFFT channel 55 that had a show called "Nightmare Theater" that played all the classic Universal horrors, Hammer, some Mario Bava, and others. They also played a lot of the classic tv shows, "Twilight Zone", "Tales From the Darkside", etc. Then FOX came along and bought it up. Now I gotta rent all this stuff or not see it at all. Oh well, I can always watch "The Simpsons", "Futurama", and "King of the Hill".
By the way, Shawn Howlett-you saw Slayer open up for Motorhead?? Man, you lucky so-and-so. I, too, am a former headbanger(well, I still am, just more discreet). There was a place in my hometown of Fort Wayne, IN called the Sunset reception hall that had a different thrash band every Fri. I remember seein Exodus, Forbidden, Death Angel and a slew of others. Man, those were the days. MOSH PIT!!!!

I couldn't agree more; ^\iN my Day i could go down the street and pay a youngster 3 or 7 dollars and they would take me in the trailer and show me films of live orphans getting their Eyes picked out with a pair of scissors or maybe a horse forced to drink gallons of stool softener and making a mess. Now i go to may up to $13 and they show me mass produced chickens getting ttheir skin pulle d off and they are not even alive having already been beaten to death with hammers. Don;t ask me.
