I've read several short stories online (I was especially avid some time back) and I've found quite a few treats.

Naturally I need to mention "Painting Blue Murders" by Steve Savile and "Jean" by our own Brad Gullickson.

Also, two Clegg stories I'd never come across otherwise, "I Am Infinite, I Contain Multitudes" and "The Wicked."

Ray Garton had an image-wise painful (especially for us guys) piece called "Active Member" that I can't shake out of my mind.

"Rat Food" by Edo Van Belkom, I believe won a price in its day, and that's why I read it. I must say I thought it was inferior to the other nominee (Clegg's "I Am Infinite, I Contain Multitudes") but it was a disgustingly decent tale.

Clive Barker's "Lost Souls" and Poppy Z. Brite's "Pin Money" are other notables I've read online.

Edward Lee and John Pelan's "Transcendense" was intense enough, thank you.

Maybe more will come back to me later.
How about you?

I used to be a bit standoffish when it came to reading fiction online but since publishing my first short story on the web I've grown quite fond of the medium. My favorite site would have to be Horrorfind (www.horrorfind.com). Besides "Painting Blue Murders" and "Jean," you can read some really cool tales like "Dirty Black Summer" by J. Newman (who wrote the excellent chapbook "Holy Rollers" which I've mentioned on this board before), "Incentive No. 43: A Brackard's Point Story" by Georff Cooper, and "Her Last Act" by Regina Mitchell. Plus, Shane Ryan Staley's short story "Twins" has one of my favorite first sentences...I'll let you discover it for yourself. It's a great place to go to read a wide variety of fiction and I myself am far from reading all of it.

Other cool places to go are:

Deviant Minds at http://home.dencity.com/deviant_minds/

Gothic.net

The Chiaroscuro at http://www.gothic.net/chiaroscuro/chizine/

Thanks for providing those links and recommended stories at horrorfind, Mr Self Affliction. I need to head on over and do some readin'. I think I'll start with Regina Mitchell's "Her Last Act." Mitchell is one of 'em deviant, maladjusted broads, isn't she? LOL:D

I'll be back with comments. Right now it's Friday afternoon and for a bachelor that means it is nearing smashtime! (i. e. consuming vast amounts of the golden liquid with fellow buddies of the same persuasion)

"I saw their god, master. He burned me. I want to burn him back."

I posted a couple of stories on www.darkhalf.com, but they are very tame compared to some of the stories on that site; very extreme.

Thanks for the recommendations Smile Speaking of "Jean" at Horrorfind, I have to say again it was very Laymonesque and I really hope to see more from Brad.

I'll check out darkhalf.com later, Psychoman.

I used to be an avid reader of the fiction at Gothic.Net and Chiaroscuro, but lately I just haven't had time to check them out. Twilight Showcase is another good one to look at. They usually have high quality fiction.

Thanks for the kind words rachaela. Much appreciated.

I forgot about Twilight Showcase. They had an excellent Mark McClaughlin story posted a little while back. Now, that's a writer I can relate to (I don't know if that's a good thing though).

Mr Self Affliction, is the Mark McLaughlin story you're thinking about "Adroitly Wrapped"? If so you are correct; it is brilliant. I read it in Karl Edward Wagner's The Year's Best Horror Stories XXII.

I can see what you mean by relating; it could esily be put in a same anthology as "Jean." Really bizarro mondo story.

Oh yes, I almost forgot... It's a good thing to relate to him, I think. Wink

Yesterday I was over at horrorfind and read "Dirty Black Summer" by J. Newman. A most shattering story about a family revelation that leves you hanging at the end. Twisted in a great way.

I was so moved by Regina Mitchell's "Her Last Act" I hope you don't mind me sending this to a friend? There is true anguish in this story. Anguish in a way only a mother can project it in concern for her child. Very dark end-of-the-world setting. The very fact that it dosen't tell straight out loud what cataclysmic even has unfolded outside the apartment the story takes place in only makes it more far reaching in its speculation on exterior treat. The ending, though tragic, is also strangely peaceful and soothing. A very well told story, Regina. You are indeed a writer! In some ways Regina Mitchell's "Her Last Act" can be seen as an answer to Alfred Bester's classic short story "They Don't Make Life Like They Used To." It skips Bester's black humour and is instead writ murky and sad.

That's not the McLaughlin story I'm thinking of. I'll have to check that one out though.

"Dirty Black Summer" is great. Now you have to order his chapbook HOLY ROLLERS from Darktales.

And yes, "Her Last Act" is a wonderful story. I've been reading some of Bester lately but I have not read that tale. I'll have to go looking for it.

I saw that the McLaughlin story "Adroitly Wrapped" was available at Horrorfind. I think you'll identify with this twisted pup, Mr SA.

Yes, I distinctly remember you talking about Holy Rollers and I've had good and fast response and delivery when ordering from DarkTales so I think I'll go ahead and order that one.

I got your email, Mr SA, thanks for the address again. I'll email you soon, boy.

Thanks, you guys. I'm really glad you like the story. It came about one day when I had a headache and my daughter wanted to play. I've never read Bester. Where can I find this story?

Charlee Jacob, Mark McLaughlin, Donn Gash, Mike Bracken and more. you can find it at Delirium Books I haven't read all of them yet, but am really looking forward to the Charlee Jacob story.

rachaela, I was really upset to see that Delirium went online because I had just bought a subscription and had only received two issues. It was such a neat little mag. Oh well. I'll have to go and check out the fiction. Donn Gash also has a neat little tale up at Horrorfind.

Rachaela, a little wolf tipped me off to your story. "Her Last Act" was a chiller. I've sometimes wondered what the hell I'd do in a situation like that.

I've never read that Bester story, either, but it's in his collection "Virtual Unrealities" which came out in the late '90's.
If I see a copy, should I grab it for you?

Oops, almost forgot--

Has anyone else read Clive Barker's "Animal Life" at Dark Carnival? The page even has a little illustration by Barker--kind of reminds me of the way I thought of Fenny up until I actually got a look at 'im. ;^)
