Has anyone heard about Lois Tilton? I first came across a story of hers in a Borderlands 2 anthology called "The Chrysalis."
It stuck in my mind so I picked up a book by her which I read in one go. She is very deft in using historical settings and periodic environments. From the novel I read, Darkness on the Ice you could say she is a female equivalent of "Grim Tim" (Tim Lebbon). This novel, for instance, is set on Greenland during the end of World War 2. It's a bleak story that offers little in the way of light or hope as a SS Nazi officer-cum-vampire kills off Americans cold bloodily. The only catch is that when he runs out of enemies it's not as if his fellow Germans are any safer. Now, I know this isn't the right place to elevate vampire fiction so I'll just hurry along to mention she has a book out titled Written in Venom. This book is especially interesting to me since it deals with norse mythology. I think it's actually set back in old norse times, with the old characters. Hope Fenris is in there

Does anyone know if Borderlands is still continuing as a series? I've got the first four, starting in '90. Just wondered how many books there are in this series.

I haven't seen any BORDERLANDS since #4 myself.
I do like Tilton's work. She had a very good alternate history Civil War story in F&SF in the early 90s. "A Just and Lasting Peace," I think it was called. It was miles, and miles better than Maureen McHugh's "The Lincoln Trains," which won some award. (McHugh's story just plopped stuff from the PRC into 19th Century America, and IT DIDN'T WORK for me.)
I hadn't seen anything by Tilton in years but last year, she had a good co-authored story in Realms of Fantasy that dealt with archeologists in Egypt and a vampire-like being. Very good story, and I was glad to see she was still writing.
She also had a story in a Twilight Zone athology from the early 90s about a house haunted by a slave hunter.

I was glad to just have seen Lois Tilton in the BEST OF 2000 book Steve Savile informed us about. That means she's still up and about. I think her first novel Vampire Winter is out of print along with the one I was so fortunate in getting, Darkness on the Ice (both Pinnacle Horror). It can't be pushed under a chair that she has a penchant for vampire fiction but that's cool with me. She also has a historic saga going that I can't remember plot or premise about.
I genuinely love stories set during the civil war, Mike S, so I would go through a lot of trouble to read "A Just And Lasting Peace". Sounds grand. Keep on writing in the free world, Tilton!
Too bad about the Borderlands series. I would have liked to see this line continue. Wonder what happened?
What do you folks think of its editor Thomas F. Monteleone by the way? I have not been overly impressed with the short stoies by him that I've read so far and they have a book by him in my store titled Night Of Broken Souls that seems to have an apocalyptic feel to it. I've picked it up but never seem to summon enough motivation to go all the way through with buying it. Should I? What do you (all of you) think of Monteleone?
Leonizing Tilton's thread,
Fenris

I just saw VAMPIRE WINTER in the bookstore yesterday. Maybe I should give it a closer look. But you know that it has to be pretty damn interesting for me to pick up another vampire book.

Okay, here are some Lois Tilton titles.
"The Chapter of Coming Forth by Night" is by Tilton and Noreen Doyle. it was published in the Jan. 2000 issue of Realms of Fantasy. It is about the vampire-like Egyptian creature.
"A Just and lasting Peace" is by Tilton, from 1992 (?) and I think it was republished in the Gardner Dozois year's best anthology for that year.
From ADVENTURES IN THE TWILIGHT ZONE is Tilton's "The Shackles of Buried Sins," about the slave hunter's ghost.

Lois is a wonderful lady and a great writer, but I regret to say she has quit, we have a few last offerings, Written in Venom (via Wildside Press) and sequel to her first vampire novel via HIVE...
Grab them - then pass nice words along and I'll make sure she gets them
