I have really begun to read horror books , I would like to get some suggestions about what's really good , but the catch is that i prefer somethinng that is mainstream . And not exactly a lenghty lenghty book , but something that will spook me ,and leave m e saying .....wow . I read Salem's Lot by Stpehen King and i must say it wasn't all that bad . But i would like some suggestions on a few good books , I would also prefer they not be Stephen King ( I'm trying to read something for a different horror author , as long as i can understand it .)
thanx

Welcome David! Let's see if I can help you out with some excellent horror reading.
So you want something that leans more towards the mainstream than that artsy fartsy horror. Well how about:
THE BOTTOMS by Joe R. Lansdale--Lansdale is my second favorite author (Harlan Ellison being my favorite) and THE BOTTOMS is his latest release from Mysterious Press. I wouldn't exactly say he is mainstream but THE BOTTOMS is definitely his most mainstream novel. If you like this one than I'd advise you to look into his other stuff. I'd say check out THE DRIVE IN books (my personal favorite Lansdale stuff but you might find it a bit weird), but please try out THE BOTTOMS.
RED DRAGON by Thomas Harris--you might have already read this but if you haven't than what's been holding you back? RED DRAGON is awesome, SILENCE OF THE LAMBS is good, and HANNIBAL just sucks (my own humble opinion here, I know people who loved it but I just couldn't stand it).
Richard Laymon is another man you might want to check out. His stuff is a lot more intense and graphic than Stephen King but I just love the stuff. Right now he has three books readily available in the U.S. (THE STAKE, BITE, ONE RAINY NIGHT). I haven't read these yet but you might want to spin over to www.amazon.co.uk and pick up THE CELLAR, THE BEAST HOUSE, THE MIDNIGHT TOUR, and my favorite SAVAGE.
Well, that's the stuff I'm going to suggest. There's a lot more other great stuff out there but I let the others fill you in on the rest.

David-
I would definitely pick up any of the Books of Blood by Clive Barker. They'll leave you saying "wow" alright, and they fit your "not too long" criteria.
I'd also suggest picking up an anthology like "999" or "Gallery of Horror" that will give you a taste of what's out there - then you can pick up novels by the authors you liked.

Deena's right, 999 would be a perfect purchase for you to get a taste of what's out there.

I agree with Mr. Self Affliction, Richard Laymon is an outstanding author. "The Stake" was the first book that I read by Laymon, and since I have bought every Laymon title that I come across. "The Cellar" is great also, my only problem now is trying to fit a good horror read in between school texts; college really disrupts my pleasure reading. "The Alienist" by Caleb Carr is also a great read. Here's a couple more that may be of interest:
"Mythago Wood" by Robert Holdstock(Fantasy but still excellent)
"The Scream" by Skipp & Spector
"The Face that must Die" by Ramsey Campell
"The Doll Who Ate His Mother" by Ramsey Campell
"Crucifix Autumn" by Ray Garton (if you can find it at a reasonable price"
"Baal" by Robert R. McCammon

ONE RAINY NIGHT by Laymon is a must-own. Also, I am partial to Skipp and Spector's THE SCREAM and a novel Mr. SA sent me, THE BLACK DAHLIA. Good lord, what a totally beautiful but brutal piece of work...I am in love with this book, haven't really read much else in the last two days. Edgar Allen Poe's anthologies or AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS by Lovecraft are exceptionally awesome.
