GALILEE: A Romance by Clive Barker I'd have to say I love this book. What eroticism! What characters! Can't wait for the final part to come out. Should call for more horror too, since the Gearys are mounting an attack on the Barbarossa clan. This novel delivered in every aspect of what I expected from Clive Barker. I liked the way Barker made the author of Galilee as a character in the novel. He sort of incorporated himself into his work. Clever and makes fascinating storytelling with some powerful interludes. I didn't realize you liked this book. In fact, you're one of the few people I know whose read it. I didn't pick it up because the dust jacket synopsis didn't really peak my interest and I wasn't too impressed with Barker's SACREMENT but now that you say such kind words about it, I might have to reconsider. I totally agree with Fenny. Galilee is my favorite full-length novel by Barker (barely beating out Everville). I was completely unsure what to expect because I knew it wouldn't be flat-out horror, but it delivered on so many levels: as a historical drama, an epic of Gods and Men, a pure romance, a sociological study, and a touch of the unknown. It's the kind of book only Barker could write, because in anyone else's hands, it would be totally unbelievable. I find myself scouting out Galilee's house every time I am in Charleston, that's how wrapped up in the story I got. An amazing story! Submitted By: Deena

BTW, I believe they are making a movie from this book - I think it would be an excellent movie if handled correctly. It could be the movie that showed the world that Barker can do much more than horror - like "The Stand" and "Shawshank" for that other guy. Submitted By: Deena

Looks like I'll have to put Galilee on my reading list. Speaking of Barker...According to this month’s issue of LOCUS magazine he has handed in his script for his next movie in which he will direct, AMERICAN HORROR. This movie concerns the early American railroad expansion and Barker has stated that he is trying to make a totally original "American" Monster. This is probably the movie I'm most looking forward to (with the exception of SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE coming out later this year that deals with the making of the 1922 version of NOSFERATU). Even though Barker has only directed three films, he's one of my favorite directors. HELLRAISER and LORD OF ILLUSIONS are just great films. Okay, okay...that's enough of my movie talk. MrSA - I've read an interview with Barker where he was discussing that movie. It sounds like something he has been developing for a long time and is really excited about. I think period horror stories are the most scary & believable, so this should be an exceptional film. Like you, just the idea of Barker directing another film is reason enough to see it! I love period horror flicks, well, period horror movies in general. Be it Bram Stoker's Dracula (yeah, I know a lot of people hate this film because it really has nothing to do with Stoker's vision but I love it none the less), last year's Ravenous, or Cast A Deadly Spell. I just like stories that are set in my past. I don't know why, I guess I just find them to be more fun somehow. Submitted By: Mr Self Affliction

I THINK THE MODERATOR OF THIS FORUM IS TAKING LIBERTIES WITH HIS STATUS BY ENCOURAGING ALL THIS MOVIE TALK. Should we have him deported to the movie board? ...Lol I know what you mean about SACRAMENT, Mr Self Affiliction. You know how I feel about Barker so naturally I liked it, but it's his hardest book for me to place as to how much I do. The book seems personal and autobiographic on one level but also remarkably searching and diffuse on another. Maybe this is one of those novels Barker just HAD to write? Deena, thanks for those views on GALILEE. I noticed you had read it so I had hoped to coax some input from you. Barker blended his skills to make a awe-inspiring epos with this work. I never thought I would find myself reading a romance this side of Danielle Steele, but with Barker everyhing gets tinted with the fantastic, and he usually has enough of the dark stuff included to keep me happy. Yeah, deportation would seem like the only thing you can do. However, Lock me up, toss me in a trunk, drive me to the ocean, toss me in with cement shoes, let Dagon feast on my bones, but you know that I'd still come crawling back to get my two cents in. Anyway, I think that SACREMENT might be one of those novels that I might enjoy a lot more a few years down the road. But when it came out, I was just not in the mood for it. I wanted "Horror Barker," not "Auto-Biographical Barker." Now though, I think my mind is much more open to other things than just the good old horror stuff. Submitted By: Mr Self Affliction

Whew! I was over at the movie board; there seems to have been some bad blood there and a much harsher tone then I've ever seen on this side of Casey's. I'm just glad we can tease each other like this and still keep up the good work and spirit. As for going back to the Clive Barker movie... period setting...the Barker dialogue and the inventive imagination that I'm sure will be a part of it...mmm. I don't dare to think too much about it, for I have the feeling original and innovative projects often are put out of commission by the movie industri when they find out they can make an easier dollar by doing something that is "known" and "safe" instead, say like another teen slasher film, for example. I'm keeping fingers crossed for this Barker project and I'm just gonna let it sweep me off my feet when it comes. Submitted By: Fenny

Yeah Fenny, I've been over at the movie board as well and some heated comments have been made. I like you am glad that we can handle each others opinions. And Fenny, let's stay positive.
