I was at the bookstore tonight and perusing the children's section looking at Baum's OZ books and I happened upon a collection of young adult horror tales edited by Edo Van Belkom titled, BE AFRAID! In it there are stories by Joe R. Lansdale, Richard Laymon, Ed Gorman, Steve Rasnic Tem, and a bunch of other interesting writers. And the price is only $6.95 (in US dollars).

Anyway, the book got me thinking about horror stories for children. There's another young adult collection out there now called THE WOLF AT YOUR DOOR edited by Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling (spelling???). It's got some great reviews and is probably worth checking out as well.

But the one I'm really interested in now is BEDTIME STORIES TO DARKEN YOUR DREAMS edited by Bruce Holland Rogers. This one is not for kiddies but all the stories contained within are told with that dark child within us all in mind. There are only a few stories in the collection that are a bit rough for a kid but other than those I'd feel perfectly fine reading it to my kids (that is if I had any). Take special note to Bruce Holland Rogers' three stories, "The Goblin King," "The Dead Boy At Your Window," and "The Apple Golem." This is one neat little writer. I've become very interested in him lately, mainly due to his contribution to IMAGINATION FULLY DILATED II, "On Top." That was one of the most unique and original stories I've read in a long time.

Okay, I went on a bit much but I was having fun.

I've not read much in way of young adult horror but let me just state this from the outset:

Everybody should go and read "The Thief of Always" by Clive Barker. This book is guaranteed to astound readers of all ages. I've read it twice and I'll sure as hell read it many times over. I regret not including this one in the "Books you love" thread because this is by all means a book I love.

BEDTIME STORIES TO DARKEN YOUR DREAMS. What a gorgeous title! I think I'd have bought any book by that name. I can understand your interest in this, Mr Self Affliction. Bruce Holland Rogers is a name to look for. "The Dead Boy at Your Window" was just the kind of offbeat tale I enjoy immensely. You must let us know more as you progress with you interest in this matter.

BE AFRAID!
Well, with such a list of writers - did you put Tem in there just to tease me? - I'd be interested as all hell. Every catergory is an artform and I'd be fascinated to see how these writer's tackles the young adult theme.

P.S. Yes, it was the right spelling Wink

Sounds interesting, the good thing in my opinion about the horror tailor made for younger readers is that we can get them at a young age and slowy indoctrinate into the world of horror and then deliver more ripe souls unto the dark... um... er... I mean... deliver more joy into the lives of people. (J/K)

Seriously though, anything that gets people started on reading young, something that they can enjoy, is a good thing. That's why I think Harry Potter really is a great thing, and I plan to check one of those out sometime soon, just to see what the big craze is.

As for Bedtime Stories to Darken Your Dreams, I've been meaning to get that one too, it's listed in the borders here as a local author even. Looks like a great anthology!

And Fenny, I've been wanting to pick up and read The Thief of Always sometime, I'm glad to hear your recommendation. Another to add to my list.

THE THIEF OF ALWAYS is a classic and I'm surprised I didn't put it on my "Books I Love" list either. Oh well, consider it added.

And yes Fenny, I did toss Tem's name in there to tease you. I'll let you know what I think of the stories when I read them.

Wolf,
Totally agree with you. I think the Harry Potter stuff is just great. And I'll give a kid anything in the horror genre just to pull them in. Whaaa haaa haaa!
