I couldn't afford to go on a bookshopping spree as proclaimed so I had to pick carefully. I had plans to go for the alluring "House of Leaves" which are making the rounds now, but then my eyes fell on Peter Straub's newest collection, "Magic Terror", a volume containing 7 tales. The contents list are as follows:

Ashputtle
Isn't It Romantic
The Ghost Village
Bunny is Good Bread
Porkpie Hat
Hunger, an Introduction
Mr. Clubb and Mr. Cuff

When the choice came between this and "House" there really wasn't any contest. This books looks like it has some really wide and varied ways of delivering the chill, told, of course, in Straub's inimitable style. I've read "The Ghost Village" from beforehand (at least thrice, in fact) and it really is one of my favourite novellas. Stories of this length is also very intriguing in that one can develop themes, characters and ideas to a very forceful effect, and at the same time being eloquently rereadable without commiting yourself to novel format. Glad to have secured "Magic Terror" - this boon of supreme suspense and storytelling - into my ranks of horror lit.

Yeah, I picked this one up as well. I was a bit disapointed to see that Straub didn't put in any new stories but oh well, I bought it any way.

Hmm, another one I'll have to try and pick up. I haven't read much Straub yet, but I read Ghost Story a while back and that was excellent, so I have to believe most of the tuff he could write would be great. I need to look at more of his stuff (among the thousands of other books I should read : ) ) and see what it has to offer, you guys have said a great many good things about it here.
