Not so surprisingly, after Mr. SA's good news (congrats again btw!) someone else from the board had to have bad news. And of course, that someone is me. lol
Today was what I suppose is a milestone in my life... I received my first-ever rejection letter... from DNA Publications, the press that puts out magazines such as Weird Tales, Fantastic Stories, Science Fiction Chronicle, Absolute Magnitude, and Dreams of Decadence. I'm not going to throw it away or tear it up. Rather, I'm going to scan it and make a copy. If I get 4 more rejection notices (which I most likely will... I've already submitted to 3 other print magazines, 2 of them being "big-names," and the online submissions have been ignored), I'll be eligible for publication in The Rejected Quarterly, in which you have to include 5 rejection notices with your story submission. It may not be glorifying, but it's having a story of mine in print, and that's something for a cover letter.
And here's something that irks me: the bastages from DNA had the grapefruits to include a subscription card for their magazine with my rejection. Reminds me of that Far Side cartoon with the vultures. "Talk about adding insult to injury! Not only did they beat us to him, they left the guy's organ donor card!" If I ever become famous, I'm going to make use of this first rejection letter. I'm going to laminate it, personally visit the offices of DNA Publications, and hang it on their wall, along with an article giving some work of mine praise, perhaps even (hope of all hopes) a clipping from the New York Times bestsellers' list.

Welcome to the club Odic! I also have been rejected from DNA. In my case I was not given a subscription card, but Darrell Schweitzer had the cannolies to suggest I purchase a book he co-authored which would inform me how to be a better writer so I could be published. Alas, I etched a pentagram on the floor of the cellar and burned my notice one Walpurgisnacht.

I've been rejected from Weird Tales and found out that mine was one of the nicer ones. But I've received subscription cards or notices from other zines I've submitted to, even when getting a rejection. I guess they're just trying to stay in business, too. I dunno.

LoL I loved your response, Dan
And if they do that to stay in business, it's a lousy idea. Take this situation for example: I'm telling everyone I know that they added insult to injury, therefore are jerks and no one I know is going to buy their magazine. lol Let's put em out of business! =)

Only problem is when more periodicals hit chapter 13 we have less to submit to. A work on the NYT's list would be monderful, but a work finally published by DNA would also be like hometown dirt to Dracula. Also have been meaning to tell you that "Your Fortune Cookie" is one kickass short story. Roy Hudson may soon be in that NYT's elite group.

lol you do have a good point, I've already been hard-pressed to find magazines that accept fiction such as mine, I need all the help I can get! And thanks, I'm glad you liked the story. =) The first half of that story actually happened with me and two of my friends at a Chinese restaurant and I decided to play out the "what if it really happened?" theory. hehehe My friend who got the empty cookie was a bit perturbed at the ending of the story, but otherwise he liked it. hehehe And you should see the blush and grin on my face at reading where you said I may soon be with NYT elite. =)
