Okay people, I'm sorry for being kind of absent from the board these last couple of days but I'm gearing up for finals all this week. Lucky you, Mr. SA, I have to wait another few weeks before I get to the finals. Unfortunately for the Klown, they buried me(no pun intended) in report papers for Psychology, and Sociology. So I know how you feel, brother. But here's a great little post for all the little kiddies out there that don't like the end of the year, or dislike the school that they are in. Check this out for college: 1. We have a BIG festival here for the end of the year, including a battle of the bands. 2. for those that like boats, we have sailboat races here after finals. 3. I have 4 classes, and no final exams. 2 classes have papers due for the final(one is 7-8 pages long, and the other 2 pages long on Dante's Inferno, and if anyone is really familiar with that book drop me an email, it would be most appreciated)1 is a project, and the last class is a take-home, open book essay test that you have one week to finish. I'm in-between you two guys. Out of 5 classes I have 3 exams. Took the first one today and it wasn't so bad. My exam tomorrow is based on a true-false test that my instructor handed out to us as a "study guide." And my third test is the only one I'm worried about. Instead I'm concentrating on reading: still finishing up And The Ass Saw The Angel by Nick Cave and am about halfway through Incubus by Ray Russell. Does anyone know if this is the same guy that wrote the story "Sardonicus?" Submitted By: rachaela

Believe it or not I actually envy you people. I miss my days at The U, undergraduate days especially. Graduate school was not as eventful. I still take a few 500 level English classes, whenever a topic or major author looks interesting. Ray Russell wrote a story called "Sardonicus", it is in a few anthologies. Ray Russell was one of the most influential writers of the macabre ever. He became an executive editor for Playboy in the 1960's and was responsible for getting Bradbury, Matheson, Charles Beaumont, Harlan Ellison and many more published there. His fiction could be described as modern gothic. Incubus is one of the best damned novels that I've ever read. When Barry Hoffman asked his customers which books he should consider publishing in his "Classics Revisited" series, I suggested Incubus immediately. He said something like, "Huh? Who's Ray Russell?". Sheesh! Russell also wrote screenplays. He adapted his own story, Sardonicus, in the William Castle film, Mr. Sardonicus. For Roger Corman, he wrote X: The Man With X-Ray Eyes and The Premature Burial. He adapted his own novel, Incubus, for director John Hough, who also helmed Matheson's The Legend of Hell House, with less than spectacular results. Despite some so-so movie credentials, Ray Russell was a master story craftsman. It's sad that he's almost forgotten today. He perished in 1999 from a stroke. Submitted By: Mark Sieber

Thanks for all of the information on Russell, everyone. Do you know if the film based on Incubus was also called Incubus? Even if it's bad, I'm curious to see it. I'll probably start a new thread about the book when I'm finished because I've noticed some interesting things. Submitted By: rachaela

It's called The Incubus. It's not a terible film, just nothing like its superb source. It's long out of print, but you should be able to locate it in the older horror titles in your local video store. Good luck! Submitted By: Mark Sieber
