Utne Reader's latest edition examines this issue. If I want to read a current or classic horror tale, I would rather have a dog-earred old paperback, not the software version for RCA's new Reb 1100. Some feel used bookshops will become rare editions. I love used book stores, and see many who post on this board agree with me. I have not seen any specific stores named, just generalizations of trips to these stores. Can we name a few favorites?

Powells-Portland, Oregon
The YesterYear Shoppe-Nampa, Idaho
Vargo's-Bozeman, Montana
Rainbow Books-Boise, Idaho

All have a good horror section. Happy searching!

They said the same thing about classic cars a few years back, that they'd all go the way of the junkyard in favor of new, not-so-gas-sucking-ones. But I still see them around. My favorite used book stores are:
Mecosta Book Gallery--Mecosta, MI
Paperback Book Exchange--Mt. Pleasant, MI
Sleepy Hollow Bookshop--Midland, MI (I got a hardcover 1st ed of Created By by RC Matheson for $1!!)
Hard Boiled Noir Books--DeWitt, MI (http://www.abebooks.com/home/HBNBOOKS/)

I also like several of the shops I've done business with on abebooks.com

Well, the used bookstore is booming in my area. Everytime I go in one there are always a lot of people milling through the shelves.

Here are my favorite used bookstores in the Virginia/DC/Maryland area:

McKays Used Books in Centreville, Virginia and Manassass, Virginia.

Wonder Book in Fredrick, Maryland

C&W Books in Chantilly, Virginia

R&W Books in Manassass, Virginia

Cosmos Books in Manassass, Virginia

Burke Books in Burke, Virginia

Hole In The Wall Books in Tysons Corner, Virginia

Book Rack in Fairfax, Virginia

Kramer Books in DC

__

And I was just told of several more bookstores in my area. Finding a new used bookstore is like finding Atlantis. I just feel all giddy inside.

The two bookstores I want to go to the most are Powells in Oregon and Dark Delicacies in LA. I spent the first ten years of my life in California but I didn't start reading until I was 14 or so. I missed out on so many used bookstores and comic shops in southern California that it really makes me sad when I think about it.

I almost forgot! A great place to get a bargain is The Yard Sale! Spring is here, time to get that old box of books that belonged to great grandpa out of the attic and mark them all at fifty cents.

The Texas used bookstore chain "Half Price Books & Music" used to be very good. Recently, however, they've taken to stocking more and more remainders, to the point that the used books are being slowly pushed out. So now I go to "Recycled Books" in Denton (about 45 minutes north of Dallas) every weekend. It's run by a couple of old hippies, has two floors, and has a separate, large horror section (about 10 bookcases with 7 or 8 shelves each). They even have a separate "collectible horror" section.

When I was going to law school down in San Antonio "Half Price Books and Music" always had the best selection of used horror. It's sad to hear that the chain is going down hill on that score. I'm in New York City now and have yet to find a used book store with a good selection of used horror (who'd have thunk it). Although The Strand bookstore is generally a good used bookstore I do not find it very browser friendly (They don't really breakout titles and authors by genre). So if anyone has any NYC reccomendations please feel free to post them here.

For anyone living in the southwest or midwest check out THE HALF PRICE BOOK STORES. They have about 100 stores in WI,OH,PA,TX,OR,MN,AL,and IN. Tremendous selections, cheap and very clean.

My favorite chain is The Book Nook in and around Metro Atlanta. Although, they really don't have much in terms or collectible or rare books.

I loved the Antiquarian Book Shop in Atlanta before they went out of business. They had rare, signed, first editions, prints by artists, old magazines, you name it!

C. Dickens book store is good, too, except they are way too expensive. They are a "browse, don't buy" type of store that has ultra-rare books.
