"Salems' Lot" by King
"Vampire Junction" by S.P. Somtow
"Progeny of the Adder" by Leslie H. Whitten
"Those Who Hunt the Night" by Barbara Hambley

Well I'm not a real fan of vampire fiction but put the vampire in the right hands and he/she will write one fine story. So I'll give here:

I AM LEGEND by Richard Matheson
'SALEM'S LOT by Stephen King
"To Short A Death" by Peter Crowther
THE TRAVELING VAMPIRE SHOW by Richard Laymon (although I'm not sure I'd really call this a vampire book)

That's all I'm going to list for now. Haven't read DRACULA yet but I'm working on fixing that sometime soon.

I'm not a huge fan of vampires, either, and you guys have covered some of my picks. But here goes:

"Bite-Me-Not or, Fleur de Feu" by Tanith Lee (it's really a novella, but I love this one)
Dark Dance by Tanith Lee
I Am Legend by Matheson
'Salems Lot by King

Okay so need I tell you that vampire novels are the best in horror literature? Hmmm favorite vampire novels. That's kinda difficult but here it goes.
"Interview with the Vampire"(I think we all know who wrote this)
"Dracula"(and this as well)
"Covenant with the Vampire"(Jeanne Kalogridis)
"Salem's Lot"(it's quite obvious)
"The Vampire Lestat"(Anne Rice)

Well, I am a fan of vampire novels, but only as long as they take place in the modern world. I'm not really sure why that is. That's why my favorites are;

1. Salem's Lot
2. The Light at the End
3. the Anita Blake series
4. The Sonja Blue series
5. Bloodsucking Freaks by Christopher Moore

"5. Bloodsucking Freaks by Christopher Moore"

Make that BLOODSUCKING FIENDS. I always do that for some reason. And I've never even seen that movie.

1. Dracula
2. The Vampire LeStat
3. Interview with a Vampire
4. Salem's Lot
5. Necroscope
6. Those who Hunt the Night
Those are the books of the moment -- I've hardly read a vampire book I DON'T like.

NECROSCOPE, ey? I've never been a big fan of Lumley's writing. A bit too thick on the atmosphere for my tastes. Although I will say that FRUITING BODIES AND OTHER FUNGI is a great title for a short story collection.

I think Lumley can put a real good scar on you. Plus there are elements of whimsey that really offset the horror very well. I especially like Harry's conversation with Mobius.

Though you do learn not to get attached to any particular character as you know Lumley will get around to killing them.

You guys made some great choices. I especially agree with The Sonya Blue Series (The new one, Darkest Heart, is due next month), S.P. Somtow's Vampire Junction series, Fevre Dream, I Am Legend, They Thirst, The Light at the End and, of course, Chris Moore's hilarious Bloodsucking Fiends. A few I'd add to the list are:

Christopher Golden's Shadows Series
Ray Garton's Live Girls & Lot Lizards
Jeff Rice's The Night Stalker
Poppy Z. Brite's Lost Souls
Richard Laymon's The Stake & Bite
Colin Wilson's Space Vampires
Kim Newman's Anno Dracula
Whitley Strieber's The Hunger

Some of my favorites, INPO:
ANNO DRACULA, Kim Newman
DRACULA (yeah, I read it, nanny nanny boo boo)
CARMILLA (short story, I know) Sheridan Le Fanu
INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE
Most of the NECROSCOPE Series...some, I don't like

I am not a huge vampire fan so most of my exposure has been "mainstream", I'm afraid.

Yep, I really need to read ANNO DRACULA, LOT LIZARDS, and Golden's SHADOW SERIES. But God knows when I'll get to them. In the mail today I received Peter Atkins's THE WISHMASTER story collection and Edogawa Rampo's JAPANESE TALES OF MYSTERY AND IMAGINATION. Not to mention the hundreds of other books I have yet to get to on my Reading List. But like a wise man once said, "Who wants a library of books they've already read?"

Mark, thanks for reminding me--I don't know how I could have forgotten to add Live Girls to the list! It's a great novel. I haven't come across Lot Lizards yet, but I'm always on the lookout.
