Has anyone here read any of the marvelous books by Randall Boyll? It seems he's really the best-kept secret in horror. In the '80s he wrote some hilariously gory novels. Back then I read two of them: Mongster and Chiller. Both are funnier than Christopher Moore and gorier than most horror books. Boyll paid his bills by doing novelizations of Shocker, The Long Kiss Goodnight and Darkman (As well as writing a short lived series of original Darkman novels. Damn good ones, as good as things like that can be, anyway). Now, in 2000, Randall Boyll has published what looks to be his breakthrough novel, Katastrophie. It's a major hardcover release. I haven't read it yet, but I found an old paperback of his first novel, After Sundown, at abebooks.com. I'm halfway through it and it's as insanely compulsive as his other books. Randall Boyll reminds me of Joe Lansdale, not in the writing style, but just thinking about his books brings a huge smile to my face. His paperbacks are available at abebooks for just a few bucks each. Either Mongster or Chiller would be WONDERFUL introductions the this demented writer's work. I honestly cannot recommend them highly enough. Remember the first time you read Lansdale........

I picked up Katastrophie but haven't read it yet. Edward Bryant is a huge fan of his writing and says that he even reads his novelizations because they are so damn good. Bryant gave Katastrophie such a good review in LOCUS that I just had to pick it up. The book has one of the strangest first sentences I have ever encountered: "He held a gun in one hand and a chicken in the other."

Yeah, the reason I picked up Mongster in the first place is the quote on the cover: "A Splendid New Horror Writer!"- Ed Bryant. Plus the name, Mongster, sounded so strange. The book itself is even stranger, but absolutely hilarious. I think Chiller is my favorite so far, but then, I haven't read Katastrophie.

MONGSTER is definitely a great title. Unfortunately, I have yet to see any of Boyll's other books at my local used bookstores. Oh well, I'll keep checking.

If you see it in a used bookstore be sure to pick up AFTER SUNDOWN by Mr. Boyll. It is somewhat inspired by THE SHINING, also owes something to the Donner party legend. The line from it that still echoes in my mind is "after four days of hunger we ate our brave dog."
It is less humorous than CHILLER or MONGSTER. By the way, Mr. Boyll has a new hardcover out about reincarnation. The title escapes me.

Eric,
I'm about three quarters of the way through After Sundown and it's a wonderful book. The startling imagery is worthy of Bentley Little, though I think I like Boyll even more than I like Little. High praise, but I mean it. These people in this book are in a REALLY BAD situation. My favorite line from the book so far:
"God has fucked us in the ass!!!"
By the way, the new hardcover by Boyll is called Katastrophie.
