Just finished reading F. Paul Wilson's new novella SIMS Book One: La Causa. This was my first Wilson read and I really did enjoy it.
The story of a world similar to ours, except that the technology is far more advanced. Scientists have taken Chimps and spliced the genes with humans to make a hybrid of sorts called Sims. The Sims are used for manual labor (they're basically slaves) and the like. The complications of the story come into play when Patrick Sullivan, an opportunist, decides to help unionize the Sims. His life is threatened and yadda yadda yadda. (Reading my summary, I must say that it doesn't sound to interesting but you'll just have to trust me when I say it was an extremely fun read, a definite page turner)
Don't want to give away too much, it's only 136 pages. SIMS is just the first book in a series that Wilson says will be at least five books maybe six. It totted on the back as being Wilson's THE GREEN MILE. I know that I'll be coming back for more. Unfortunately, since this is a Cemetery Dance book the price is $35 and will end up being quite an expensive story.
I'll definitely be writing up a more in-depth review for the site.

Hey, Mr. SA-
This is the first I've heard of "SIMS", and if it's that pricey, it'll be a while before I get to it.
But from the sound of your thumbnail review, I HIGHLY recommend that you seek out Wilson's oft-overlooked gem, "Dydeetown World". In addition to its science fiction theme, it's a terrific "noir-ish" hard-boiled P.I. tale.
Bye now,

Romany, as I said SIMS is published by Cemetery Dance Publications (those great people who publish Cemetery Dance Magazine) and for the most part their books cannot be found in chain stores, so that maybe why you haven't heard anything about it. To check out what's really hot in horror right now go to their site www.cemeterdance.com
We haven't really talked to much about the small press on this board but it's my own humble opinion that right now it's the place to be when it comes to reading really high quality horror. Other companies to check out are Subterranean Press (www.subterraneanpress.com), Darktales Publications (www.darktales.com), Silver Salamander Press (www.horrornet.com/silver.htm), Gauntlet Press (www.gauntletpress.com), and there are lots more. I buy from all these people and I've never had a single problem, just the opposite.
The small press books do cost quite a bit more than your average mass market paperback but if you can afford it there's no better place to go shopping.
A few more places to buy great books are at:
www.hellnotes.com and while you're there you might as well sign up for their newsletter (it's essential if your an aspiring writer).
The Gargadillo Bookstore at www.gargadillo.com has a lot of great stuff as well.

Speaking of F. Paul Wilson, has anyone read his Repairman Jack stories?Especially "Legacies."
I read a short story with Repairman Jack in it, and it was incredible. It made me want to read every story with him in it. He's like a modern Sherlock Holmes for the inner city.
So, I was wondering if all the Repairman Jack stories were good, or if I stumbled upon an exception.

Deena, SIMS was my first F. Paul Wilson book, so I won't be able to help you here too much. However, I just bought THE TOMB and THE KEEP on the advice of Mark and some other guys at horror.net. They're supposed to be really good.

MrSA, let me know how those two are, because one of them, I think THE KEEP (I get them confused because I've never read either) is pretty high up on my TBR list. The one in the Nazi camp. Something about Nazis always interests me. Especially supernatural ones.

You're going to have a good time reading anything by F. Paul Wilson, but the Repairman Jack books are the funnest. The proper order in which to read his books is:
The Keep
The Tomb
The Touch
Reborn
Reprisal
Nightworld
Legacies
Conspiracies
All The Rage.
His medical thrillers are all excellent as well. They may be read in any order.

Thanks for the info, Mark!
I'll have to get around to reading those. What are some of his medical thrillers called? They might be good for a change of pace.

Hi Deena,
I'm happy to oblige. Some of his medical thrillers are:
The Select
Implant
Deep As The Marrow (My favorite)
Well, I guess he only wrote three. BUT, he edited an excellent medical thriller anthology entitled, Diagnosis: Terminal.
F. Paul Wilson is a physician in real life. That adds quite a bit of authenticity to the tales.

Sounds cool, Mr. SA, if a bit expensive for me right now. I'll have to see if there's some other way to get that sometime, or maybe get it when I have more money, as I have enjoyed the F. Paul Wilson I've read so far.
And Deena, if you're a fan of Repairman Jack, you have to read The Tomb, as he's the main character in that, I think you'd really enjoy it as I did. I also didn't know there were other stories of Repairman Jack. I'll have to find those as I really did find myself liking the character a great deal.
Thanks for the list Mark, I've often wondered about the order, though it seems I was getting it right. I'll have to see when I can read some of the others.

Wolf,
I'm sure that once Wilson is done with SIMS and CD's published the whole set, some mass market company will pick it up.

HALLÅ, I'm running up RomanyX as a candidate for Message Board Poster of the Week!
I have to say this everytime I do a F. Paul Wilson post. Michael Mann's movie THE KEEP prompted Wilson to write "Cuts", a story in which an author puts a voodoo curse on 'Milo Gherl', the director who butchered his novel.
I will also just have my say on the only F. Paul Wilson novel I've ever read. I bought SIBS because I heard in an interview - Dark Thoughts: On Writing - that Wilson feels this is his best book. It's also listed in the 113 Best Books by Stanley Wiater.
SIBS is simply one of the best - Jeez ,I say that a lot, don't I? Well, it is! Do you want to be afraid? Do you want to be scared into a gibbering ratskag? A human parody of a wobbling jellyfish that has been stamped on 58 too many times? Then read this and see how long your ass will bother to withhold its contents. SIBS is a shaking horrormysterysuspensethriller about bodily takeover, mindcontrol, and sisterly secrets that will take you literally to the limits of psychic badlands.
