I am looking for info or remembrances
about the following.
In 1968-69, when I was in eighth grade,
ABC aired a one hour British supernatural
anthology series entitled "Journey To The
Unknown." It opened with a haunting,
whistling title theme, and a camera tracking
through a deserted amusement park at night...
genuinely creepy. It moved onto roller
coaster tracks, soaring upwards, then
plunging down, at which point the orchestra
crashed and the title words flashed onto
the screen.
Only two episodes have stayed with me.
The first featured Carol Lynley as a woman
who was a manequin. The second, which haunts
me still, was a story entitled "Miss Belle."
This was interesting because at the time I
did not understand all of what was going on,
and thought it odd that a story like this
would be aired on an allegedly supernatural
show, because this story had no supernatural
element.
In the story, Miss Belle is jilted by
the man she loves, who winds up marrying her
sister. Miss Belle is embittered. Several
years later, the sister and husband die,
quite naturally, I recall, nothing suspicious,
and Miss Belle becomes the legal guardian of
their child Robert. But because she is
embittered on men she exacts a disturbing
revenge. She takes in Robert, rechristens
him "Roberta," and dresses and raises him as
a little girl. Robert senses he is not what
his aunt maintains and when his maleness
asserts himself, his aunt punishes him
abusively. One scene had the child cowering
underneath a table, having spilled a vase,
while Miss Belle verbally berates him,
clutching in her hand a piece of fruit that
she pulps in her hand, suggesting if the
child does not behave the same will happen
to his pet frog. Only in adulthood could I
recognize what this was--a psychological
study of repression and child abuse. A
handsome handyman is hired to work on the
premises, cathces onto the situation and
threatens Miss Belle to tell the authorities.
With her repressed sexuality, she becomes
attracted to the handyman, culminating in a
scene where she visits him, only to find him
in bed with another woman. Miss Belle is not
happy.
I have no idea of the outcome, only that the child is rescued from the horrible
situation. If anyone out there remembers
this series, and this episode especially,
I would like to hear from you. In retrospect
it is interesting that this could have been
aired on American television.
