I've spent the week going through DEXTER and am really enjoying the series. It's not as dark or as grissely as I thought it would be, but the dark humor works. As much as I hate to admit it, I find myself hoping that Dex kills more people. _________________ Are you and Independent Filmmaker? Yeah, I'm pretty jazzed that it is about to start back up again. I even had to read the first two books in the series to see how it was originally conceived. I love the whole "sociopath just trying to fit in"-spin on it as well. Very dark humor. |

I read that the books differ from the series, or at least the first one does. The second season is suppossed to be unique unto itself and has nothing to do with the second book.
A bit of trivia....DEXTER is Latin for "right" or "good." "Sinister" is latin for "left", but we get the modern derivitive from the old belief that all serial killers/evil men were left handed. I've been wondering the last few days if the character's name is a consicous play on the words and their meanings.....hmmmm..... _________________ Are you and Independent Filmmaker? This may sound a bit out there, but my daughter and I love this show to death. Last week, she came running up to me and said, "Dexter starts next week and I want to have a Dexter breakfast for dinner in front of the tv for the premier!"
We went out and bought our goodies. We have a thick ham slice, grapefruit, eggs, bread, some tabasco sauce, and we'll be making decaf coffee. She says we have to wear a white tee shirt.

Daphne, you obviously have a pretty cool daughter. I'm always turned off by the food during the credits...
Fortunately, tonight is a free preview weekend of Showtime and I can catch the season's first episode. Sadly, between all the premium stations and the pay stations (HBO and Stars/Encore), I can't afford to add another set of movie channels....looks like i'll be waiting until next year for the rest of season two. _________________ Are you and Independent Filmmaker? The first season and book were close plot wise, but had a few differences throughout. The second book would be extremely difficult and graphic to film, so it doesn't surprise me that they went a different direction. I did notice a few carry-overs from the second book into the first episode though, so I guess they did grab a few things. |

You've got a great daughter there! I love the opening sequence - It rates as one of the few opening sequences I actually watch and don't just fast-forward the DVR. Who would have ever thought that morning routines could be transformed into some creepy serial killer images?
I love it! Now I have to start eating breakfast while watching Dexter. |

She came running upstairs last year screaming "You won't believe the beginning of this show!"
So, I said, "Huh?"
She started jumping up and down and listing on her fingers, "The shoelaces, they're like being strangled! The tee-shirt is like suffocating someone! He cuts this ham, and it's like he's pulling an Ed Gein! OhMyGod.....Mom. The hot sauce is blood, the orange is like flesh, the coffee grinder is just gross. Bones!!! Someone took BREAKFAST and turned it into MURDER! I HAVE to see what's NEXT!"
Then she disappeared back downstairs. I'm surprised she didn't fall to her death (how ironic that would be).
So, yeah, we ate breakfast in front of the tv and had a nice time. We have the Adams Family! _________________ Work is the curse of the drinking class. |

That's great. I love the little traditions that pop up around watching some show. I feel like I should always listen to Kansas's CARRY ON MY WAYWARD SON just before every episode of SUPERNATURAL. |

I get that. We were huge Buffy fans and had family night in front of the TV for years of Wednesdays. _________________ Work is the curse of the drinking class. |

The absence of Buffy and Angel is still felt here to this day... |

B, I have watched every episode. It's been a fun ride, but some of the story plots have been a bit too easy to guess. It's as if the great acting and scripting has only made up for the predicability of most of the major plots this year.
Did you feel the same way?
I already know I'd like this series on dvd, but to date, there have been few "Arlington Road" moments. _________________ Work is the curse of the drinking class. |

With the exception of DEADWOOD, I've found most shows to be highly predictable. With DEXTER I'm usually so caught up in the dark humor that I don't care that most of the show's moves are telegraphed weeks in advance. _________________ Are you and Independent Filmmaker? Sorry for my delay in response! I've been hammering away on a new application and time is just vanishing... At any rate, I'm still a faithful viewer!
I think the season has been noticably weaker than the first season, but still ranks up there as one of my favorite shows. It seems that the "Bay Harbor Butcher" plotline would have been better served in a later season after the show had firmly established itself instead of so early in its cycle. It is going to be hard to ratchet up the tension in the consecutive seasons without the public spotlight on his... uhh... nightly excursions.
Also, some of Dexter's actions have seem somewhat reckless and completely out of character for the meticulous sociopath persona. I'm not sure there even has been a moment this season of Dexter caught in one of those ackward moments where he was unsure what emotion he should be faking.
I'm like you two though - the humor is so twisted and wrong and funny and the acting is so top-notch (I think Carradine has been a great addition to the cast - I hope they figure out a way to keep him on after the "Butcher" subplot is over), it is easy to ignore the flaws and just enjoy the show. Hopefully next season will have a little less soap-opera though...
It is doing a killing (excuse the pun) in the ratings though. A couple episodes ago ranked as the most-watched Showtime series episode EVER. While still not Soprano numbers, they are solid enough to guarantee a third (and maybe fourth) season. Of course, that is speculation but it is hard to imagine Showtime scrapping it with the momentum it is generating. |
