|

I am a new member to the site. I am trying to find the name of a 70's horror film/TV Movie that gave me nightmares for years! I was 3yrs old in 1980 and one night was unwell. My parents let me stay downstairs. A trailer came on the TV (British Channel) which began with a black dog chasing a young girl down a corridor, it cuts to a black and white photo on fire of the girl, then cuts to the dog crashing though a window into an older mans bedroom. The man looks directly at the dog who has green eyes (although that might be the camera lens reflection) and the dog then attacks him.
I have tried for years to find out the film. Any suggestions would be most welcome. I know it isn't The Omen, Cujo or Zoltan if that helps? Thanks. |

| Hmmm... Sounds like most black dog movies. A few names that you might try - Dogs (about a pack really), Devil Dog: The Hound from Hell, and The Beast Must Die! The latter is actually a werewolf movie, but I believe they used a black dog to fill in for the role of the wolf. |

| Thanks for the feedback. A few friends actually mentioned Devil Dog but apparently the dog in that film is a German Shepherd. I have never heard of The Beast Must Die so I will try that as well as the film Dogs. Thanks. |

I have just been given some information regarding my quest to find this dog movie: a friend I know said that he remembers a black dog attacking a family in the American TV series "Tales of the Unexpected" (in Britain it was called "Twist in the tale"). Apparently there is an episode called Devil Pack which does have a dog smashing through a window to attack a family.
I looked on some sites and there is hardly any information oin this TV Series. Has anyone got any images or info on this obscure programme from the 70's? |

Are you sure it was in the 70's? Tales of the Unexpected started in '78 or '79, but ran for several years later. Some of the series is available here in the States on DVD. I actually rented the first disc of Volume one awhile back and keep meaning to get back to it. From the episodes I saw, it was kind of a Twilight Zone series with Roald Dahl as the host. The episodes ranged from pretty good to... well, not so good.
After you mentioned this show, I immediately thought of Hammer House of Horror too. Seems like there was a similar scene in one about werewolves, but I can't honestly tell you it was a black dog specifically. |

I managed to locate the year and it was 1977. The episode was called Devil Pack. I too at first thought it may be the Roald Dhall series but it is in fact Quinn Martin's Tales of the Unexpected (called Twist in the Tale in the UK).
It's really frustrating as there is hardly any info on the net about this series!
Thanks for the Hammer House feedback as well. |

Wow, you are not kidding! I just took a look and was pretty stunned to see just how little info there is. That is pretty amazing considering it was a NBC show by Quinn Martin (Fugitive, Invaders) no less. That doesn't speak well for a box-set release of the series. My only suggestion would be to start hitting places like ebay in case someone has a copy out there. You would be surprised how many old TV shows I tracked down that way.
Of course, that's if the episode in question is the one you are actually looking for. Do you have any more info on the trailer you saw? |

I totally agree! Considering it was Quinn Martin you would have thought there would be at least some images or quotes from the series. On IMDB there is a comment from someone who said that Devil Pack was about a family who were being terrorized by a dog. They also said that the Mum and daughter managed to get into their house, but as they looked round they saw a black dog growling on the balcony, then it smashes through the window, which sounds extremely like my childhood memory.
Does anyone have any info or comments on this episode/series? |

It's just an little obsession of mine I've had since I was scared as a kid by this scene.
Unfortunately there isn't a lot of information on this programme. Anyone else remember it? |

Hey Bates - I'm not sure you are still around or not, but thought I'd pass this along anyway.
I'm currently working on a new addition to the TV section and just happened to stumble across this very series and episode you were talking about.
Devil Pack was on Quinn Martin's Tales of the Unexpected and originally aired on February 16, 1977 on NBC in the States. You are right - it was definitely renamed Twist in the Tale for the UK.
The synopsis for the episode concerns a pack of wild dogs that terrorize a small community. What is worse is that their inhuman howls somehow turn the families' domesticated dogs against their owners as well.
In the book, Quinn Martin, Producer: A Behind-The-Scenes History of QM Productions, the editor of the show is talking about their special effects and references the fact that they had to make the "big black wild dogs" eyes glow red - not the green you mention, but worth nothing...
The cast/crew is as follows:
Directed by Harry Falk
Teleplay by John Wilder & Arnold Somkin
Based on a story by Nina Laemmle
Starring:
Ronny Cox as Jerry Colby
Van Williams as Sheriff
Christine Belford as Ann Colby
Russell Thorson as Scottie
Larry Mahan as Deputy
David Hollander as Todd Colby
David McLean
Paul Pepper
For even more fun, check out the opening credits (but not from this episode) on YouTube:

Of course, all of this info will be on the site in the somewhat near future! |
