Anybody see MTV's new "reality" series,
FEAR, last night?
It has its flaws - I suspect some scenes
were staged, and the show was heavily
edited to increase its dramatic effect -
but overall I thought it
did a great job of showing just how
frightening an empty, dark room can be.

Hey Mick,
Agreed. I thought it was a lot of fun. The electric chair scene was classic. I thought it was surprisingly good.
I'm curious if the producers were behind a few of the glitches. There were times that their communication got cut off and the lights turning off on Christina. Still, it was interesting to see so much of the fear being of their own making. Those footsteps were really creepy.
The really interesting part was that you could tell just in the courtyard who was going to have some serious problems in the prison. Some were pretty freaked out before they even went on their dares.

Agreed, Casey; I think the footsteps and
other elements were generated by behind-the-scenes production people.
Seems I read somewhere - probably
here - that the producers planned to
"enhance" the experience with some type
of special effects. I thought this would
be a lot more overt, but I'm pleased
with the outcome, which gave the
participants more leeway to scare themselves.
And, hey, the one guy - forget his name -
who "cheated" by standing outside The Hole
- wasn't he just a riot? He aggressively
urged everyone else on despite his own inability to cope. Glad to see he won out in the end, though.
And Ryan summed things up well in the end -
it's easy to sit and home and think, "Aw,
there's no reason to be afraid, it's just
a dark room, and the powers that be wouldn't
let anything happen to you, anyway." It's
another thing entirely, I'm sure, to be
there facing that dark room.
I wish they allowed participants over 30,
but this being MTV . . .
The previews for the second episode looked
spookier than the first - can't wait!
Incidentally, any idea what the theme song
was? I know I've heard it before, but
couldn't identify it, and it wasn't listed
in the credits.

Hey Mick,
The intro song was "Voodoo" by Godsmack. A perfect choice in my opinion.
And agreed - the second episode looks very interesting. I'll give them credit for picking some unique places to start. Rather than simply picking an old house, rumored to be haunted by locals, the choices of a penitentiary and hospital for the first two episodes are perfect.
What I am interested in seeing is if MTV starts picking some very contrasting individuals to make up the groups in future episodes. I'd imagine if there were some inner conflicts among members of the group, there would be a lot less of them that make it through the two nights (or was it four - they said both at one time or another). The first group really banded together and helped one another through it. Imagine how much harder it would be if they were more on their own (or worse - with the rest of the group against them).
And I agree on the 30+ idea. Despite it being MTV, I can't imagine why they wouldn't do this.
-Casey
