Howdy. Just wondering if I'm the only living human to remember this show. It ran for 2 seasons in 71-72. The first season it was called "Ghost Story" and the second it was changed to "Circle of Fear". I believe it was on NBC at 10 p. m. I was only 11 or 12 when it was on but I remember loving it. Basically a "Tales from the darkside" type of anthology only higher budget and an hour long. I remember an episode with Janet Leigh and having something to do with a death's head moth. Also a really creepy one with an art-supply store with jars of something on the shelves that whispered to each other when the store closed and the lights were turned off. Memory's pretty sketchy here but I remember it being a really fun show. In three years on the net I havent found a single site that mentions this show. Damn, it was on primetime on a major network..SOMEONE must remember it!

LOL. Anyway...hoping some of you horror nuts remember it and could offer some comments. Thanks.

Aye Carumba!!
I was beginning to think that the show was a figment of my imagination!
"I'M NOT CRAZY!!"
The episode I remember dealt with a young girl making cookies with her grandfather and putting in toothpick arms and legs and bits of cloth. Voodoo stuff, I suppose. Anyway the house started on fire and cookies burned up. Family too. Seemed pretty blood curdling at the time. Still does.

You're not alone, friend.

I remember the episode with the Jars that whispered to themselves, and the death's head moth too.

How about the one with the guy and his girlfriend that came back to life in the barn to seek revenge on their killer?

Also, there's an episode with John Astin (Gomez from the original Addams Family) where he was a former horror film star who was now a security guard at the lot where his films were made.

The monsters from his old films came to life and haunted him until he broke into the vault where his films were stored, and burned them all, destroying the monsters.

The show was directed and produced by none other than the godfather of the theatre gimmick, William Castle.

Interesting to note that William Castle made a guest appearance as the owner of the studio lot.

Castle was the big-gimmick man in Hollywood in the late 50's early 60's, giving us the classic "House on Haunted Hill", and "The Tingler", both of which starred the immortal Vincent price. Also, he did "13 Ghosts".

Castle also did the film "Rosemary's Baby" in 1968, but it got left in the dust it's opening weekend as we all were caught off guard by the Night Of The Living Dead.

The film "Matinee" with John Goodman is a sort of loosely based tribute to William Castle, and a darn good one at that.

Maybe a bit of overkill on my part, but I was a 70's TV kid, and now I'm a 90's kinda' guy that loves classic horror just as well now as back then. Enjoy!!!

I remember Ghost Story/Circle of Fear also. What a great show that was. I have been looking for the videos but can't find any. If you go to epguides.com you will find the Titles and Air Dates of all the episodes. That is the best I can do. If anyone ever finds any video, air dates on T.V. or whatever... please let me know. Thankx!!!

Glad to see some people addressing this show--it's probably the least known or discussed network horror series, barely rating much more than a mention in TV history books. It deserves a little more than that, IMHO. It actually ran from 1972-73 on NBC Friday nights, with its first story having no less than Jason Robards Jr. discovering his TV set showing him ways to get rid of his enemies -- and then letting him see them rise from their graves. Spooky, although not "grisly," as Variety claimed in its review. NBC added the show because they wanted a contemporary horror series and "Night Gallery" was disappointing executives in that regard. Its creator was William Castle, but unlike most of his movies it had no gimmick other than Sebastian Cabot as host. The decision to remove him midway through the run was a mistake, although I think it was a stretch to have him play a character introducing each show rather than play it as himself. Overall, the show was very uneven--some creepy shows, others just ridiculous, especially at their conclusions--but any series which attracts the likes of Martin Sheen, Helen Hayes, Jodie Foster (she was the mute daughter in the aforementioned voodoo episode), Karen Black and Janet Leigh, among others, can't be all bad.

At last! I found some reference to Ghost Story\Circle of Fear. I must have been 8 or 9 years old, but I've always been a huge horror fan and I'll never lose a couple of images of that show that I have in my head. On one show, a man accidently kills his wife by pushing her down and then her ghost and comes slowly walking across the yard towards the house Scary! The other image I have is of an accused witch who was hanged centuries ago, walking up the stairs with a red welt around her neck, saying "Give me the baby" Whew, giving myself nightmares.

P.S. I would love to rent these if they're available on video, any idea if they are?

YES I REMEMBER IT!!!! I've been searching for sites on this show for about 2 years now and never have much luck!!!

There was a few shows I remember....(I was only 5 years old but I remember them pretty well). The first was about the Jars...I remember them too because my mom had glass canisters in her kitchen that looked just like them. They freaked me out.

The next was about a rocking horse doll. The people tried to keep getting rid of it and it kept coming back. A man even buried it in the front yard and when he walked back into the house it was sitting there on the counter.

The next was about a doll house that was fashioned after the real owners house. Everything that happened in the house (whether one of the dolls fell down or something else) actually happened to the owners in the real house.

Not bad for 5 huh??? I'm trying to get these episodes on video tape - I'll gladly pay $$$ for them. Maybe you could help me too.

I write this with tears in my eyes. I have found my soulmates!!!!!! I am the only person I know who remembers some of these shows. I have been trying to find info on the net for months about it. I was only 5 & 6 when this show was out and my memories are very sketchy, but I do remember some of them. They terrified me! The one with the jars in the back room of that sore scarred me for life....man was that creepy. We must band together and find these thing on tape! If I come across anything I will certainly do all I can to supply everyone. I too began to wonder if this show was only in my imagination but some memories are too damn vivid. This totally makes my day!

Sorry....I guess I came across a little too enthusiastic. I was just too excited by the fact that there are actually people out there who can back me up on this show. About the episode with the jars, can anyone give a little more detail on it. I seem to remember that people would go into this back room of the store and not come out. That somehow they were being sucked into these jars where we would see their faces floating. I also seem to remember the store catching fire near the end of the story. A little help would be great. Thanks

Yes, I do remember Circle of Fear! I was 10 years old at the time and I remember it scaring the hell out of me. I remember several episodes that were not previously mentioned:

Bad Connection - a woman kept receiving strange phone calls

Spare Parts - this episode had Susan Oliver in it. At the end of this show, she traps a doctor in a room with a running 1972 Corvette and kills him. The plot centered around donated body parts that were haunted and caused havoc ever after they were attached to other people.

There was also anothe episode with Susan Dey that centered around a cold upstairs apartment and an ax murderer.

I have managed to find a web site that markets a Circle of Fear episode. Graveyard Shift, starring John and Patty Duke Astin (who must have been pregnant with Sean at the time) is available on Hollywood's Attic www.hollywoodsattic.com Unfortunately, it is in black and white and has the closing credit of Screen Gems.

Screen Gems brings to mind that Columbia Pictures may have these episodes stored deep in their vaults. Go to columbiapictures.com and bombard their site.

Hi,Shroud,

The title of the episode with the jars was "Earth, Air, Fire, And Water." The script was written by Harlan Ellison & D. C. Fontana.

The plot concerns a group of young artists who rent an old urban warehouse for studio-space (and living quarters, I think) and find the jars in an old chest.

Eventually, each artist winds up under the influence of one or another of the entities in the jars.

I don't want to post any spoilers, so if you want me to remind you how it ends, you'll have to e-mail me.

I must have been either out of the loop or just a kid when this show was on, since I spent most of my early kidhood in Germany, but I would also like some info on how to purchase these titles. Sounds like an excellent show and I'd like to get some of the tapes to show to my fiance.

Hey all,

Watch for a write-up in the near-future about Ghost Story/Circle of Fear on The Cabinet.

As for purchasing it, I picked up the entire series on Yahoo's auction. There's a guy there that sells various collections for a whole variety of series. I don't see Ghost Story/Circle of Fear listed at the moment, but I do know that he regularly posts it, so keep an eye out.

Also, I've seen various episodes available on e-bay from time to time.

Best,
-Casey

Like many of you, I also thought that I was the only one who remembered this show, and was thrilled to find that is not the case! I remember most of the episodes discussed. They must have been the standouts, because several of us have remembered them. My recollection of the episode with the donated body parts was that they were the organs of a murder victim, and the three people who received them in transplants were 'taken over' by them, and wound up revenging the victim on the murderer. Also, I believe in the episode with Helen Hayes, she played the teacher of a little boy (Michael James Wixted was the actor's name, I think) who had an evil doppelganger. Sci-Fi channel needs to find these shows and rerun them!
