Hollywood Escapes: The Moviegoer's Guide to Exploring Southern California's Great Outdoors |
Book |
4/1 |
| By Harry Medved, Bruce Akiyama |
|
Overview by TheCabinet: Authors Harry Medved and Bruce Akiyama have compiled this collection of outdoor locations throughout Southern California that have appeared in movies and television shows over the years. It includes an impressive number of horror film locations, including The Hills Have Eyes, Bronson Caves/Griffith Park, and even The Hollywood Sign. The focus is on locations in the great outdoors and there are a lot of parks and highways included, but that does not exclude buildings that were used for exterior shots. Aside from offering fascinating tidbits about each location and the context of its appearance in given movies, the duo even offers recommendations for food and lodging in the general areas at the same time. As for the locations, they list their addresses as well as offer directions to get there, complete with maps. Hollywood Escapes is an excellent collection for anyone fascinated in the world of filmmaking or just interested in exploring the outdoors of Southern California.

Monster Spotter's Guide to North America |
Book |
4/1 |
| By Scott Francis |
|
Overview by TheCabinet: This book is best described as a quick reference field guide to cryptids throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Each entry is rather light on details or historical reflection, but the amount of mysterious creatures listed is quite impressive. It takes a tongue-in-cheek approach at times with cartoon-like drawings, but is an excellent introduction to the sometimes-forgotten stories and mythology of various areas. The locations covered include Scape Ore Swamp (and the Lizard Man), Lake Erie (and tales of Bessie), Leeds Point, New Jersey (home of the Jersey Devil), and countless more. It sometimes favors legend over truth, but makes up for it with the sheer volume of critters covered. The guide to locations associated with the monsters can range from the very specific (like Boggy Creek, Arkansas) to the far more general, such as a particular state where a monster might have been sighted. Given the fast-facts approach and sometimes vague area descriptions, the entries typically cry out for more research before packing your bags and going to seek out one of the cryptids inside.

Where Are They Buried? How Did They Die? Fitting Ends and Final Resting Places of the Famous, Infamous, and Noteworthy |
Book |
4/1 |
| By Tod Benoit |
|
Overview by TheCabinet: A comprehensive listing of the grave sites of the famous and infamous. The book covers over 450 cultural icons and their final resting spots around the world. Chapters are broken down by theme and generational appeal, along with helpful indexes for all of the individuals, as well as the states and countries covered. Includes such destinations as Hollywood Forever Cemetery, Oak Grove Cemetery, Fall River, MA, Calvary Cemetery, St. Louis, Missouri, etc. Each entry contains decent directions to both the cemetery and the graves inside. The only missing aspect is an index that lists the individual cemeteries as it is not uncommon to find multiple personalities at one site.

The Worldwide Guide to Movie Locations (NEW updated edition) |
Book |
4/1 |
| By Tony Reeves |
|
Overview by TheCabinet: This collection of movie locations around the world is fairly comprehensive and includes countless horror film locations among its listings, including the Ennis House (House on Haunted Hill and more), Monroeville Mall (Dawn of the Dead), Bagdad Cemetery, Leander, TX (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), and many, many more. The directions can sometimes be vague and very little beyond how the location appeared in the film is offered, but the book makes up for it with the sheer number of sites collected. The book lists the locations based on the movie titles (though there is not a helpful listing of what movies are included) and there is an index that breaks them down by country and state. Given its general coverage, more research may be required, but the book offers a fantastic array of locations that you might otherwise not think of.

Civil War Ghost Stories and Legends |
Book |
3/1 |
| By Nancy Roberts |
|
Overview by TheCabinet: The title of this book gives you a good idea about what you are in store for. Author Nancy Roberts has compiled 18 locations associated with the American Civil War that are reportedly still haunted by their role in the conflict. Among the locations covered range from the McRaven House in Vicksburg, Mississippi to the infamous Andersonville National Historic Site. Those looking for the location's historical role in the conflict should probably look elsewhere. The focus of this book is on the lingering effects left behind by the role the location played, although each chapter starts with a painfully short recap of the general area during the war. As for the legends, the accounts of the paranormal are told in dramatic recreations that takes creative license with the tales. While not a big fan of this approach, Roberts manages to make the stories interesting and poignant. If only she had included more about the war, which is often more horrifying than any ghost story.
