Laid to Rest in California: A Guide to the Cemeteries and Grave Sites of the Rich and Famous Book
0/0
No Comments
By Patricia Brooks, Jonathan Brooks
Overview by TheCabinet: The title pretty much sums it up nicely. This is a travel guide to the graves of the rich and famous throughout the state of California. While California-based, it does cover plenty of authors, politicians, murder victims, and pretty much everyone else that made their name on their own or in unfortunate circumstances. The chapters are ordered by geographical location in the state where you find the cemeteries in that particular area ordered alphabetically. Each cemetery starts with a brief history and interesting facts, along with a quick listing of some of the names found inside, before giving detailed information about a few select personalities alphabetically. The names are accompanied by a historical overview of the personality's life and death, as well as where you can find them on the grounds. In the midst of a cemetery's coverage, there are even helpful hints about local restaurants and museums, as well as fun facts about the general area. Among the cemeteries included in this book are Hollywood Forever Cemetery, Mount Hope Cemetery, San Diego, CA, and Angelus Rosedale Cemetery. Obviously this is California, so there are countless more cemeteries covered that encompass the entire state. Fortunately, the book also contains an index that lists the names and cemeteries in the collection so readers can jump to an entry fairly quickly. It also has handy guides to personalities that were cremated and ashes dispersed elsewhere, those buried overseas, bodies that were donated to science, and even a few whose bodies were lost and never recovered. All in all, a fantastic guide of California celebrities that will save any dark traveler plenty of time and research. The only major downfall is that there are bound to be more than a few names that were not included in this volume, but one can hope another is on the horizon.

Lake Monster Mysteries: Investigating the World's Most Elusive Creatures Book

By Benjamin Radford, Joe Nickell
Overview by TheCabinet: This book is a skeptic's approach to various accounts of lake monsters throughout the world written by confirmed skeptics, Benjamin Radford (editor of Skeptical Inquirer) and Joe Nickell (member of the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal). The book examines specific accounts of lake monsters at a limited number of lakes and looks for logical explanations that explain away the sightings. The lakes included are Loch Ness, Scotland, Lake Champlain, Lake Memphremagog, Silver Lake, Lake Crescent, Lake George, and Lake Okanagan, although there is a chapter that gives brief breakdowns on other lakes around the world. It is geared towards disproving some of the modern myths, but offers valid explanations (albeit a bit lengthy in the scientific approach at times) to some of the more famous accounts of lake monster sightings.
