Astoria Middle School
This building serves as a local middle school to students from Astoria, Oregon, but also made an appearance in the 2005 horror film, The Ring Two. The facility originally opened as a Junior High School in 1968, but today is the educational hub for around 370 7th and 8th graders from the local area. Among its many student-based activities is the KICs (Kids Interested in Careers) program, which is a joint venture with the Astoria High School Business Leaders of Tomorrow.
The Ring Two (2005)
Astoria Middle School gained a little notoriety with its brief appearance in the 2005 horror-sequel, The Ring Two. The film continued the story of the main characters from the first film, Rachel (Naomi Watts) and Aidan (David Dorfman) Keller. In the plot, the duo moved to the city of Astoria, Oregon in hopes of escaping the evil influence of Samara and her cursed videotape. The school appeared in a scene where Rachel picks up Aidan from school and finds him sitting outside and transfixed watching other children splashing around in the water from a sprinkler. Only the exteriors of the building were used.
Interestingly enough, its appearance in the film is not the only connection between the school and The Ring Two. The filmmakers also used the facility to hold an open casting call on May 8, 2004 in search of local residents that wanted their chance to appear in a movie. Several extras from the area were selected from the open session and appeared in scenes throughout the movie, including the scene at Astoria Middle School.
Astoria Middle School Today
The school continues to serve students from the surrounding area and remains an active school. As such, Astoria Middle School is closed to anyone that is not a student or staff member. |
