The Goonies (1985): The Bowling Alley
This structure in Astoria, Oregon is home to the Lower Columbia Bowl and was featured at the beginning of the 1985 Richard Donner/Steven Spielberg cult-classic, The Goonies. In the movie, the character of Chunk (Jeff Cohen) witnesses a high-speed car chase involving the protagonists of the film, the Fratellis, and accidentally smashes his lunch and drink against the window.
The Goonies was filmed in Astoria during the fall of 1984 and immediately generated a lot of interest from the general public. At one point during the production, the filmmakers held an "autograph party" with the child stars of the film as part of the first Great Astoria Monster Bash around Halloween. The stars showed up in Halloween costume and were more than accommodating to the massive crowds that arrived. The crowd was so large that hardly anyone could move and efforts to talk to the crowd over a bullhorn were pointless. The adult stars of the film eventually arrived and helped break up the crowd by signing autographs in another room.
The event turned out to be prophetic in what the film would mean to the city of Astoria. Though other films such as Kindergarten Cop, Short Circuit, Free Willy, and The Ring Two have been filmed in the city as well, The Goonies continuously draws more tourism traffic than any of the others. The film's success has led the local chamber of commerce to sell t-shirts from the film to this day and sporadically offer The Goonies-based tours of the city. It is not uncommon to find large crowds of Goonies fans at any of the locations in Astoria that were used for the film.
The Location Today
As mentioned above, the facility continues to operate as the Lower Columbia Bowl. For the true "Chunk Experience," fans of the film can go inside and partake in a game of bowling or look out the very window seen at the start of the film. As it is a regular business, please check the hours of operation before visiting. |
