Information
The Brackett House
This house is South Pasadena, California made a brief appearance in the 1978 John Carpenter horror film, Halloween. It is located on Montrose Avenue alongside a few other locations that also made an appearance in the film. Although located in sunny California in reality, the street served as the setting of the fictional city of Haddonfield, Illinois in the movie.

Halloween (1978)
The storyline of Halloween concerns a group of friends that find themselves being stalked and killed off one by one by an escaped mental patient named Michael Myers. 15 years prior to his night of mayhem, Myers murdered his sister and has returned to start the killing anew.

In the film, the house doubles as the home of Annie Brackett (Nancy Kyes) and her father, Sheriff Leigh Brackett (Charles Cyphers). It appears shortly after the infamous hedge sequence where the film's heroine, Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis), notices Myers stalking them. The two continue on to this house where Annie heads on inside and Laurie is startled by the sudden appearance of Sheriff Brackett, who jokes, "It's Halloween, everyone's entitled to one good scare."

As an interesting side-note, the name of the Sheriff's character was in fact a homage to the female author/screenwriter, Leigh Brackett, whose writing so impressed director Howard Hawks, he immediately invited her to work on the script for The Big Sleep with famed writer, William Faulkner. Brackett went on to work on a few more projects with Hawks, as well as continued her career as the author of several science fiction novels. Probably her most famous work today was the contributions she made to the acclaimed sequel of George Lucas's immensely popular Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, shortly before her death. Halloween director John Carpenter is a well-known fan of Hawks and Brackett's work and decided to show his respect by giving her a "role" in the film.

The entire street was featured prominently in Halloween as the characters of Laurie, Annie, and Lynda van der Klok (P.J. Soles) walk down it. Interestingly, the locations of Lynda's house (see Halloween (1978): The Van Der Klok House), the hedge (see Halloween (1978): The Hedge Scene), and finally Annie's house are located exactly as they appear in the film. The production commenced here and in other South Pasadena locations, along with a few key sites in West Hollywood, during the month of April 1978. The movie was released on Halloween night of the same year and immediately became a hit and is often credited as helping establish the slasher genre of horror films. Its popularity continues to this day and the various locations (including these on Montrose Avenue) still see countless Halloween fans that want to experience where it was all made.

The House Today
The house still looks much the same as it did during its brief appearance in Halloween. However, fans of the series need to recognize that the house is a private residence and not trespass on the property. As always, please respect the privacy of the owner.
