Wampum Mine
This former-mine may now be used as an underground storage facility, but back in 1984 it played host to hordes of zombies during the production of George A. Romero's Day of the Dead. At the time it was known as the Wampum Industrial Facility, but before that the Medusa Cement Company mined the lot for its limestone. Shortly after World War II was over, it was purchased by the Page Avjet Corporation and transformed into 2.5 million square feet warehouse for storage.
Day of the Dead
The facility would double as an underground military facility that keeps a few remaining survivors from the hordes of zombies outside. While some of the exterior shots of Day of the Dead were done elsewhere, the majority of the film was shot inside the walls of this former mine. Production reportedly began before the sun had risen outside and was completed well into the night and many of the cast and crew reportedly never saw daylight for weeks at a time.
Gateway Commerce Center
Today the facility is known as the Gateway Commerce Center and is owned by the Bruce Wish Development Inc., who purchased the facility from Meritex Enterprises Inc. in December 2005. It continues to serve as an underground facility and, as such, is closed to the general public for tours. Those interested in checking out the facility today could always take a look at Anchor Bay's recent DVD release of Day of the Dead, which features the bonus feature of an eight-minute Gateway Commerce Center Promo that tours the facility - though the focus is not-so-much on its Day of the Dead connection. |
