The 13th Door
This Halloween haunted attraction in Beaverton, Oregon has been scaring patrons for several years now, earning it the reputation as one of the best Halloween haunts in the greater Portland-area. The haunt is the brainchild of Ray Latocki and his Haunting Productions LLC, who recently expanded their resume by opening the Glowing Greens Blacklight Miniature Golf indoor, 3D, 18-hole course in downtown Portland. In the case of The 13th Door, however, the group has quickly made a name for themselves throughout the city for providing top-notch scares and effects that has been noted to be quite intense for visitors. Interestingly enough, the haunt got off and running in a place that had already gained a reputation for odd paranormal happenings.

The Regal Cinema at Washington Square Mall
The haunt's original location was situated in the old Regal Cinema located at the Washington Square Mall in the nearby city of Tigard. The theater was a four-screen affair that dated back to the 1970s that was one of the original multiplexes in the surrounding area. When a much larger multiplex opened in the area nearby, the Washington Square theater saw a drop in attendance, which ultimately led to its demise. By the early-2000s, the theater had been closed and only opened its doors come the Halloween season for the sole purpose of frightening its weary guests with The 13th Door. It was a perfect location. After all, the relatively young building had already gained a reputation among is former theater employees of being haunted.

Why a building that is only a couple decades old is a good question, but there is a prevailing legend of a young man committing suicide in an upstairs storage room early in its history. The local police department was unable to confirm the legend, but the story continues to persist. Even if they had records of such a death, it only would explain one presence in the building. According to the book, Encyclopedia of Haunted Places, the old theater is not host to just one, but rather five different ghosts throughout the structure. These include a young girl dressed in clothing from a bygone era, a 30-something woman, a 20-something man, an old man dressed all in black whom the staff dubbed "Lurch," and even the spectral presence of a cat. Combined, the spirits were said to account for strange, muddy handprints appearing on the screens in the theater that appeared to originate from a child, doors opening and closing on their own, and the disembodied sounds of a music box playing somewhere in the theater. Perhaps most distressing to the theater's past employees (and annoyed audience members) were the reports of film reels suddenly becoming dislodged from their projectors and thrown at its operator.

Given its stories, the facility seemed to be the perfect place to host an annual Halloween haunted attraction and the spirits apparently did not disappoint. Lataki would later recount how customers raved about his special effects after reporting being pursued through the haunt by "wisps of white." As it turned out, there were no such effects and his only conclusion was that the resident ghosts were joining in on the fun. Of course, the alleged haunting also had its drawbacks, as several of the The 13th Door's employees would refuse to return and even threatened to quit after working one night in the building's Theater One - a reported hotbed of activity.

The 13th Door at Frite Lites
By 2007, the old Washington Square theater officially closed its doors for good and The 13th Door was forced to relocate. The haunt found a new home at the Washington County Fair Complex in nearby Hillsboro. The fairgrounds had previously hosted the popular Haunted Caves Halloween attraction, but in recent years had opted to focus on the more family-friendly, Frite Lites - an animated light display of scary characters and harvest scenes. In addition, the attraction also featured a slide, barn, blacklight graveyard, and even a haunted maze. The two attractions joined forces to create The 13th Door at Frite Lites to offer alternatives for the adult-orientated crowd and their young children.

Beaverton Location
By 2009, Lataki opted to once again relocate his haunt, this time to the Portland-suburb of Beaverton, and return it to a solo affair. Once again known as The 13th Door, the haunt is now set in the West Slope-area on the eastern-side of Beaverton. The new theme incorporates the legend of an old farmhouse said to once occupy the location that was burned to the ground in 1952. According to the legend, 100s of mutilated bodies had been discovered in the area that were believed to be passing transients. Out of fear of disease and without funds to provide proper burials, the bodies were dumped into the basement of the farmhouse and the structure was set ablaze. After a grocery store was built on the property, strange things began to happen that continue to this day.

Second Haunt Added
Based on the popularity of their Portland-based haunt, the group opted to expand for the 2010 season and opened a second 13th Door in Central Oregon in the city of Bend. For more information on this location, please visit the official 13 Door Web site below.
