Lithia Park
The Chautauqua Association of Ashland, Oregon started this park in 1892. Its intent was to serve as an entertainment forum and tourist destination. The park has continued to grow since and was greatly aided by the construction of the first Shakespeare theater (Elizabethan Stage) in 1935, which was the beginning of the annual Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland that exists to this day. Since that time, Lithia Park has expanded to the size of 93 acres, 42 of which are listed in the National Register. The park now features tennis courts, a volleyball court, picnic areas, playgrounds, a Japanese Garden, two duck ponds, a rose garden and vast vegetation that provides shade from the sun's heat. The 93-acre park reportedly also has a couple of ghosts as well.
The Ghosts of Lithia Park
The first ghost often associated with the park is that of a young girl, who was reportedly raped and murdered on its grounds in the 1800's. The girl is believed to be the source of a mysterious blue light or mist that is said to float above one of the park's duck ponds at night. Another story from 1975 has some college students driving on one of the roads in or near Lithia Park. They reported a blue, mist-like apparition that suddenly appeared in front of their car. As the car drove through it, all those inside were completely overtaken by a cold chill. The story continues later that night when one of the women from the car, that happened to bear a close resemblance to the apparition they saw, suddenly awoke from a deep sleep in hysterics. She was finally taken to a nearby student health center to be sedated.
Another ghost believed to be on its grounds is that of a former logger that died when a tree fell the wrong direction. In life, the man reportedly was well known for using his drinking jug as a musical instrument. There have been reports of other loggers in the area suddenly being pushed or pulled out of the way of a falling tree that they never saw coming. In those cases, the men reported hearing the sounds of someone playing a jug just before the event happened. Yet one final ghost is seen from time to time, though this one is more commonly seen haunting South Pioneer Street that borders Lithia Park. However, it has also been known to make an appearance in the Park's parking lot as well.
