The Haunted Prison Experience
This Halloween haunted attraction in the heart of Mansfield, Ohio is conveniently set at one of the world's most reputedly haunted sites - The Ohio State Reformatory (see Ohio State Reformatory). Perhaps better known as the Mansfield Reformatory, this facility opened its doors to accept prisoners in 1896 and continued to house inmates until 1990. Over its years in service, it gained a notorious reputation for its stories of death and prison break attempts and today is quite well known for its stories of ghosts and paranormal activity. In 1995, the Mansfield Reformatory Preservation Society was formed to preserve and protect the structure from deterioration. The group continues to raise money through donations and a series of tours, including such topics as historical, movie past, and ghosts.
Starting in 2000, the prison began its annual tradition of being transformed from a real-life haunted prison to a full-fledged Halloween haunted attraction. The Haunted Prison Experience was created and produced by Myron and Kathy St. John, of Haunted X Enterprise LLC., as a fundraiser for the Mansfield Reformatory Preservation Society. Myron St. John served as a stuntman/actor/producer in the 2006 horror film, Fallen Angels, and even produced his own documentary about Mansfield Reformatory, titled Haunted X: Terrifying True Tales. In addition, he is a haunt-veteran with over 18 years of experience in designing, producing, and consulting in the haunted attraction business.
The Attraction
The producers dubbed the attraction, "Special FX Meets the Supernatural," and filled the allegedly haunted prison full of animatronics, props, and actors. Visitors to the haunt will navigate an estimated 45-minute walk-through that takes them past the former prison's cellblocks and into part of the basement, which includes the prison's notorious solitary confinement. The group tries to outdo themselves each year by recreating and reinventing the haunted attraction for returning visitors. The Haunted Prison Experience has attracted over an estimated 30,000 people in the years past and the group reports that not all could handle walking through it all and opted to exit early.
