Walt Brown
Race car driver Walter "
Walt
" C. Brown, born December 30, 1911, is among the interred at St. Charles Cemetery. Brown was one of three drivers killed in accidents at two different speedways on July 29, 1951, a day that became known as "
Black Sunday
" to car race fans. Walt, who had competed in the Indianapolis 500 on three occasions was the first of the three drivers to die in separate accidents that day. Walt Brown was killed by injuries sustained from flipping a car that he was warming up at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania.
Also killed that day were fellow Indy 500 veterans Cecil Green and Bill Mackey, who died in accidents while qualifying for positions in a race at the Winchester Speedway in Winchester, Indiana. The night prior to Black Sunday, a married couple were killed by at Mt. Hawley Speedway (now known as Peoria Speedway) in Peoria, Illinois. A tire came loose from a racing car, flying into the stands and killing the couple where they sat. It was a dark weekend for fans of the sport.
Joseph Magliocco
Born June 29, 1898, mobster Joseph Magliocco was a major player in the Profaci crime family. Magliocco served for slightly more than three decades as an underboss for Joseph Profaci from the early 1930s through the early 1960s. Following the death of Profaci, Joseph Magliocco took control of the criminal organization, though his rule was brief.
Only a year into his new position, Magliocco made the mistake of asking associate Joseph Colombo to kill competitors Tommy Lucchese and Carlo Gambino. However, the treacherously enterprising Colombo chose to betray Magliocco by revealing the boss's plans to Lucchese and Gambino instead. Magliocco was forced out of power due to his murderous plotting and retired from organized crime. The Profaci crime family was handed over to Joseph Colombo and took his last name. It is still known as the Colombo crime family to this day.
Joseph Magliocco died of a heart attack on December 28, 1963, mere months after being relieved of his leadership. His grave at Saint Charles was exhumed in 1969 in order for authorities to determine if Magliocco had actually been assassinated by poisoning. A toxicology report came up negative.
The DeFeo Murders
Six murder victims of convicted killer Ronald DeFeo Jr. are buried in Saint Charles. The victims were his mother Louise (age 43), father Ronald Sr. (age 44), sisters Allison (age 13) and Dawn (age 18), and brothers John (age 9) and Marc (age 12). Ronald Jr., the eldest child of the family was 23-years-old when he murdered his family members on November 13, 1974. The house in which the murders occurred would later temporarily become home to the Lutz family, whose stories about paranormal activities during their time there led to the creation of The
Amityville Horror
franchise of books (See the
Amityville Horror House
) and movies (See the
Amityville Horror Movie House - 1979
).
One odd aspect of the DeFeo murders adds fuel to the claims of paranormal activity within the house, the family members were separately shot to death in their beds without apparently being woken by the sounds of the repeated gunfire. Each sibling had been shot once and the parents shot twice as they lay in their beds. Toxicology reports on the bodies did not reveal the presence of any drugs that would have caused the DeFeos to sleep through the murders. Theories about what happened that night have varied from Ronald Jr. having human accomplices (including murdered sister Dawn) to him having demonic accomplices who assisted him in the slayings. Ronald DeFeo Jr. is still serving time for his crimes at Green Haven Correctional Facility in Beekman, New York.
Maggie McNamara
Actress Maggie McNamara, born June 18, 1929, is also buried in this cemetery. She starred in
The Twilight Zone
episode
Ring-a-Ding Girl
and had a part in the
Alfred Hitchcock Presents
episode
Body in the Barn
.
The Alfred Hitchcock Presents
episode, aired in 1964, was her final onscreen appearance. McNamara continued on in theater, but ultimately supported herself by working as a typist. She committed suicide by overdose on February 18, 1978 at the age of 48.
Cesare Bonventre
Bonnano crime family member Cesare "
The Tall Guy
" Bonventre was buried here months following the discovery by of his remains in two separate 55-gallon drums of glue. Born January 1, 1951, Cesare was a member of the Sicilian Mafia who was relocated to the United States in the 1970s to work as a bodyguard for Bonnano underboss Carmin Galante. Bonventre was present when Galante was gunned down in his cousin's restaurant in Brooklyn by members of his own mob. There was evidence that Cesare might have participated in the assassination of his own boss.
Cesare Bonventre worked his way up to becoming an underboss himself. "
The Tall Guy
" was eventually killed on April 16, 1984 by members of his own crime family, sawn in half and stored in the steel drums of glue mentioned earlier. His remains were found there by FBI agents during a bust of "
The Pizza Connection
", a heroin trafficking operation that had utilized pizza restaurants as cover. It took three months for the authorities to officially identify his remains, upon which Bonventre was finally lain to rest at Saint Charles.
Vincent Gardenia
Born Vincenzio Scognamiglio on January 7, 1922, actor Vincent Gardenia's shared grave marker in Saint Charles bears the Scognamiglio family name in large bold letters. Gardenia appeared in a number of plays and movies as well as television. He appeared in an episode of the short-lived 1961 TV series
Great Ghost Tales.
Gardenia had a recurring roles on the popular sitcom
All in the Family
and the dramatic series
L.A. Law
. He also made appearances in the anthology shows
The Twilight Zone
(1985) and
The Ray Bradbury Theater
.
Gardenia appeared in the role of Mr. Newquist in both the off-Broadway and film productions of the dark comedy
Little Murders
. He twice played the role of Detective Frank Ochoa in the films
Death Wish
(1974) and
Death Wish II
(1982). He was also in the Italian horror film
The House by the Edge of the Lake
(1979). He portrayed flower shop owner Mr. Mushnik in Frank Oz's 1986 film adaption of the off-Broadway musical
Little Shop of Horrors
(itself an adaption of Roger Corman's comedic horror film from 1960).
Vincent Gardenia's final big screen appearance was in the 1991 comedy
The Super
. He suffered a heart attack and died on December 9, 1992 while staying at the Benjamin Franklin Hotel in Philadelphia. Following his death, Brooklyn, New York's 16th Avenue was renamed Vincent Gardenia Boulevard in his honor.
Peter J. Brennan
Born May 24, 1918, Peter J. Brennan held leadership positions in the Building and Construction Trades Council of Greater New York, Building and Construction Trades Council of New York, New York City Central Labor Council and the New York State AFL-CIO. He served as president for the first two organizations and vice president for the latter two. Despite being a Democrat, Brennan was highly supportive of the United States administration under President Richard M. Nixon.
Following the shooting of students and protesters by National Guardsman at Kent State University (See
Kent State University
) on May 4, 1970, Brennan used his positions to gather around 200 construction workers together in a rally of support for the war in Vietnam and the Nixon administration. The rally took place on May 8 near the intersection of Wall Street and Broad Street in New York City. It ran counter to a protest by hundreds of youths in response to the shootings at Kent State and to protest the war itself. After a few hours, the ranks of the construction workers had swelled as they were joined by others who supported the Vietnam War. Eventually, the Nixon supporters broke through police lines and attacked the protesters, striking them with their hard hats. Witness accounts state that the construction workers appeared to specifically target youths with long hair in their physical attacks. A number of Wall Street businessmen were also attacked as they attempted to come to the aid of the protesters.
The incident resulted in property damage as well as dozens of injuries. The rioters invaded the city hall and damaged property at the Trinity Church and a Pace University Building (where they also assaulted students attending classes). The Hard Hat Riot, as it came to be known, eventually ended with only six rioters arrested by police officers, who witnesses to the riot claim did little to stop the violence.
Peter Brennan's support of Nixon's policies led to him being chosen as Labor Secretary after Richard Nixon's re-election in 1972. Brennan held the position until being asked to resign by US President Gerald Ford following the Watergate Scandal and the resignation of President Nixon. Peter Brennan passed away from lymphatic cancer on October 2, 1996 and was interred at Saint Charles Cemetery.
Alex Algeri
Unintentional murder victim Alex Algeri is buried at Saint Charles. The 32-year-old Amityville health club owner was fatally shot on January 17, 2001, in a case of mistaken identity. His murderer had mistaken Algeri for his business partner Paul Riedel. The murderer was Ralph "
Rocco
" Salierno, who was having an affair with Riedel's estranged wife Lee Ann. She had conspired with her lover to kill her husband. The case was written about in the book,
Lethal Embrace
, by Robert Mladinich and Michael Benson. It was also the subject of an episode from the first season of the television show,
Snapped
. Algeri's family planted a tree at his grave, which they decorate at Christmas time.
Peter Steele
The lead vocalist and bassist for metal band Type O Negative is buried in Saint Charles Cemetery. Born Petrus Ratajczyk on January 4, 1962, he is largely known by the stage name Peter Steele. Early in his musical career Steele fronted the metal bands, Fallout and Carnivore, before forming the band that would become Type O Negative.
Standing more than six and half feet tall, Peter Steele made for an imposing presence on stage. His deep baritone voice somberly sang songs gothic and darkly humorous, such as
Black No. 1 (Little Miss Scare-All)
which takes a mocking look at having a relationship with a woman involved in the gothic subculture. References to horror films, Halloween, vampirism, the occult, lycanthropy and death playfully dotted the lyrics and titles of the band's songs.
Peter suffered from health problems in the years prior to his death. The decline in health was likely caused in part by heavy drinking and drug use earlier in his career. In the last few years, Steele had gone through drug rehabilitation and had reformed his previous band Carnivore, while continuing to work with Type O Negative. Unfortunately, he passed away from heart failure on April 14, 2010. He is buried in the Ratajczyk family plot.
Other Famous Graves
Saint Charles is the final resting place of tennis player Vitas Gerulaitis, who was killed at age 40 while staying at a friend's guest house on September 17, 1994. A swimming pool heater caused a buildup of carbon monoxide that leaked into Gerulaitis's bedroom through an air conditioner, poisoning him as he slept. Also to be found among the graves are singers Evangeline Hemming, John Sombrotto and Glenn Hughes. Hughes was a member of the pop group The Village People. He was buried in the biker costume he wore on stage when performing with the group. Actor Ray Sharkey, who appeared in episodes of anthology shows
The Hitchhiker
and
The Ray Bradbury Theater
, can also be found here. Visitors can also find the graves of musician/songwriter Clarence Williams and his wife Eva Taylor, the blues singer and actress.
Grave Robbery
In August of 2010, Saint Charles Cemetery was the scene of vandalism and the theft of human remains. On the morning of August 24, a cemetery caretaker discovered that coffin had been dragged out from inside the Filippazzo family mausoleum. The coffin had been forced open and emptied of the human remains it had contained.
The authorities were notified and further investigation revealed more vandalism. Two other mausoleums had been broken into and vandalized besides the Filippazzo tomb. Six more mausoleums showed signs of attempted but unsuccessful break-ins. The only remains taken were those of Mattia Filippazzo, an 88-year-old Italian immigrant deceased since 1998. Her husband Stephano's remains were left undisturbed inside the sepulcher belonging to the Filippazzo family.
The grave robbery appeared to be the work of more than one individual. There were also signs that the perpetrators knew what to expect with opening a burial vault and had brought the tools necessary to accomplish their ghoulish mission. At the time of this article's last update, no arrests have been made and a search through the local area by trained cadaver dogs has failed to turn up leads on the whereabouts of the remains. The Filippazzo family and the Mangano Funeral Home of Deer Park have offered a cash reward for the return of Mattia's remains.
