Las Vegas Haunts This Halloween attraction in Las Vegas, Nevada hosts not one but two of the area's longest running and more popular haunted attractions - The Asylum and Hotel Fear. Both are the creation of the husband and wife team, Rich and Jan Strelak of Las Vegas Haunts, and take advantage of mobile trailer technology that has become popular in the Las Vegas-area. Rich Strelak got his start early in life by charging neighborhood kids a nickel to take a spooky tour underneath his family's porch. Years later, Rich began to build a haunt in his and Jan's front yard and it slowly grew more elaborate and attracted more guests each year. The attendance got so large that the Strelaks soon were receiving complaints from the neighbors about all the foot traffic (most of which continued to trick-or-treat at all of the neighbor's homes, depleting their candy bowls) and the hundreds of cars that parked along the street. In their last year, the Strelaks counted around 2,000 guests going through their little home creation. Urged on by a friend who found their creation more elaborate than many of the local professional haunts, the Strelaks decided to take their haunt the commercial route in 1999. According to a 2007 article in the UNLV paper, The Rebel Yell, Rich Strelak was able to tap into his experience of designing sets on 1986 Oliver Stone film, Platoon, to create an elaborate haunt setting. The couple set up the production company, R.J. Productions, to construct their Halloween attractions under the banner of Las Vegas Haunts. For the first year, they held to Halloween attractions called NightMare Castle and The Haunted Theatre at an event that they dubbed ScareFaire '99. The first year turned out to be a success and the duo looked ahead to the next season. After seeing how many other haunts adopted the castle-theme, Rich Strelak looked for a way to differentiate his attraction and in 2000 launched The Asylum. By 2001, Las Vegas Haunts had run into a problem. Due in no small part to Las Vegas regulations and zoning issues, coupled with property managers's reluctance to lease their buildings for the short-duration of a seasonal attraction, Las Vegas Haunts took a different approach and began constructing their attractions in tractor trailers that connected to create the main attraction. Aside from taking care of the standing issues, it allowed the haunts to become completely mobile and free to relocate in any given year. The instant popularity of The Asylum sparked the Strelaks to create yet another attraction. This one they dubbed Darkest Hour and it had a rather macabre addition to the haunt. It turned out that a homeless man has sought shelter in one of the trailers used for the haunt, only to pass away from heat stroke when inside. In a 2003 article with the Pahrump Valley Times, a member of the staff spoke openly about the strange noises they heard inside the trailer and about the possibility that the spirit of the man still haunting the trailer. By 2004, Darkest Hour was replaced by Hotel Fear, which played off a "former patient" from The Asylum. The idea hit Rich that instead of building a haunt that relied solely on the creatures and noises inside to scare their guests, he would create an elaborate back-story that connected the two haunts together (see each attraction below). The idea took hold and The Asylum and Hotel Fear have become mainstays on the Las Vegas Halloween scene, receiving worldwide attention and acclaim. In addition to their work on the Vegas-based haunts, R.J. Productions also consults on a dark ride attraction in Canada, as well as countless other haunted attractions throughout North America. However, their base has always been Las Vegas with The Asylum and Hotel Fear. While initially, the two haunts were located at separate locations which sometimes varied from season to season, Las Vegas Haunts decided to bring the two together in 2009 in an event they dubbed Texas Screams, due to its location at the Texas Station Gambling Hall and Hotel. In 2010, Las Vegas Haunts had to relocate again due to Chapter 13 issues at its former location and settled on the Cannery Casino and Hotel. The 2010 event was titled Chaos at the Cannery and represented an effort by the Strelaks to further combine their popular haunted attractions, The Asylum and Hotel Fear, into one fun-filled Halloween event. The Asylum Strelak has stated that the theme of The Asylum was inspired by a road trip he took through Meadview, Arizona and an old, abandoned ambulance he spotted alongside the road. In a reference to that Arizona town, the haunt in set in the old Meadview Asylum where director, Dr. Vander, conducted unusual experiments on his patients. After one such patient, Mortimer Feoray, was deemed cured and released back into society, he went on a murderous rampage at his family-owned Hotel Feoray. Following the crime, the Lunacy Commission decided to take a long look at the Meadview Asylum and, in particular, the practices of Dr. Vander. Vander soon inexplicably disappeared and the asylum was closed down. However, rumors persist that Dr. Vander returned to the grounds and is seeking new patients. Hotel Fear The Hotel Feoray was a growing business when a strange disappearance raised the eyebrows of the locals. The founder of the hotel, Jonathon Feoray, suddenly disappeared without a trace, along with his son and the hotel's current owner, Edwin, and Edwin's wife, Margaret. The prime suspect was the couple's son, Mortimer, who fell into a deep depression. Taken under the wing of Dr. Vander, Mortimer was transferred to the Meadview Asylum where he underwent treatment by the doctor. Months later, Dr. Vander gave Mortimer a clean bill of health and he was returned to the Hotel Feoray. Then one night not long after, Mortimer went berserk and killed almost everyone inside the hotel and was returned to the Meadview Asylum. In the chaos that ensued after Dr. Vander slipped away while under investigation, Mortimer Feoray also made a vanishing act - some say he returned to the now-abandoned hotel that the locals had dubbed, Hotel Fear.
