Stadium Information
M&T Bank Stadium is the home of the National Football League team Baltimore Ravens. The facility was constructed in 1998 and is a short distance away from the Oriole Park, home of Major League Baseball team Baltimore Orioles. It holds a capacity of 70,107 people and has hosted several concerts and other events in its history.
Ravens Stadium
The original name of the facility was Ravens Stadium at Camden Yards, before name rights were granted to Internet Service Provider PSINet in 1999, when it changed to PSINet Stadium. After PSINet filed for bankruptcy in 2002, the name reverted back to Ravens Stadium for a short time. However, M&T Bank picked up the naming rights one year later and the stadium was again renamed to its current name, M&T Bank Stadium.
Edgar Allan Poe and the Baltimore Ravens
Baltimore was originally the home of the NFL franchise Baltimore Colts, before the owner moved that team to Indianapolis in 1984. In 1995, it was announced by Cleveland Browns owner Art Modell that he intended to relocate his team to Baltimore. The city of Cleveland filed suit and retained the rights to the Browns history and name, so Baltimore was forced to rename their new franchise. In order to come up with a new name, a contest was held for fans to vote for their favorite picks. The team's management selected 17 possible names out of a list of over 100. After a focus group and phone survey, the list was whittled down to only three: Marauders, Americans and Ravens. The name Ravens was a tribute to the famous poem The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe, who lived and was buried in the city of Baltimore. 33,288 people participated in the final telephone poll and the name Ravens picked up nearly two-thirds of the final vote.
Poe in the Super Bowl?
It seems strange to say, but there is a Poe tie-in with the Super Bowl. Super Bowl XXXV was a match-up of the Baltimore Ravens and the New York Giants. The Ravens dominated the game and walked away with a 34-7 victory.
Edgar, Allan and Poe
During the summer of 1998, the new franchise was still without a mascot. To correct this, they debuted three mysterious eggs in the then-named Ravens Stadium. During the first pre-season game against the Philadelphia Eagles on August 24, the eggs were moved on to the field for fans to witness the birth of their new Raven mascots. First out of his shell was Edgar, followed shortly by Allan, and then finally Poe. The trio of mascots have been the mascots of the team ever since. |
