Jackson-Alsop-Arnold House
This home in Atlanta, Georgia served as the fictional mansion of Bill Murray in the horror comedy film Zombieland (2009). The Jackson-Alsop-Arnold House (also known as the Edward Alsop House) was built in 1914 as a summer home for Mary Jackson, widow of Supreme Court Justice Howell E. Jackson. It was later owned at different times by Edward H. Alsop (son of steel manufacturer Edward B. Alsop) and lawyer Reuben Arnold. In recent years, the home has belonged to Lee Najjar.
Lee Najjar is a real estate developer who has had some connection with reality television shows. His home was featured on MTV's Teen Cribs series. Najjar's children Jamen and Katelin guided viewers through the house for the episode. He also has some connection with the reality series, The Real Housewives of Atlanta. Kim Zolciak, a cast member of that show, had a relationship with a man that she would only refer to as "Big Poppa." Some media sources have speculated that "Big Poppa" might actually be Lee Najjar.
The home has been expanded upon greatly from its start nearly a century ago as a summer cottage. It currently hold nine bedrooms, 11 full bathrooms (plus four half-baths), seven kitchens and sixteen fireplaces. Other features of the house include a home theater, a game room, swimming pool, and a spa complete with a hair and nail salon, massage room and tanning room. A number of rooms in the house are featured in the film Zombieland, as the interior as well as the exterior of the building was used during filming.
Zombieland (2009)
The majority of the film Zombieland was filmed in the state of Georgia, though the story spans a few states. The characters in the movie drive through Los Angeles in search of place to stay for the night. While the scenes of them driving around Los Angeles actually were shot on location (using places such as Hollywood Boulevard and Beverly Drive), the footage of the mansion they stay in was shot at the Jackson-Alsop-Arnold House in Atlanta, Georgia. The house stands in as the home of actor/comedian Bill Murray who appears as himself within the film. The four main characters, portrayed by actors Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin, stay in Bill Murray's mansion the night before they all end up at Pacific Playland amusement park (see Wild Adventures Water and Theme Park) for the climax of the movie. At one point in the film, a red Ferrari F430 Spyder also appears. Like the house, the vehicle also belongs to Lee Najjar in real life.
According to media reports, actor Patrick Swayze (Ghost, Dirty Dancing) had originally been in mind for the celebrity cameo in the film. The scene with him would have parodied a few of Swayze's most memorable onscreen moments. Patrick Swayze had to turn down the role when he discovered that he had cancer. Other actors were considered for the cameo, including Matthew McConaughey, Mark Hamill, Kevin Bacon and Sylvester Stallone. Apparently, Bill Murray was able to accept the cameo role a week prior to it being shot.
