Atrox Factory
This seasonal Halloween haunted attraction in Alabama has been attracting visitors for almost a decade for both their reputation as a top-notch haunt, as well as the countless horror celebrities that have made appearances. It got its start in 1999 as Slain Manor and was envisioned by a group of partners that included actor Kyle Holman (Sleepaway Camp III: Teenage Wasteland (1989), Hide and Creep (2004)). The haunt ran for three years before they relocated it to Leeds, Alabama (just outside of Birmingham) where it became known as Atrox Factory.
The haunt takes its name from the Latin word, "Atrox," which translates in English as "terrible, cruel, horrible, or harsh." It took over a former-factory, where the group could make use of the 40,000 square feet to unleash their creations. Today the group is composed of six haunt and movie veterans, who engineer their haunt to assail the senses of their guests. Aside from the sights and sounds of traditional haunts, the group also adds subtle changes to the haunt to exploit the senses of touch and smell as well.
Their efforts have effectively paid off and Atrox Factory today is advertised as "the largest indoor haunted attraction in the Southeast." The group also is very focused on the smallest detail and continually attempts to update and change the haunt each year, so that it will offer something new to returning visitors. Their popularity also continues to grow each year, attracting as many as 30,000 visitors annually in recent years.
The Attraction
The haunted attraction element of Atrox Factory is a 1/4 mile of twisting hallways, filled with all sorts of creatures in both animatronic and human form. The effects range from lighting to sound effects, with moments suspended in total darkness, to the visceral of assault on senses that can induce the sensation of vertigo. Props and scenes can range from the gruesome and graphic, such as an autopsy sequence, to the subtle eeriness that is no less terrifying.
Aside from the haunted attraction itself, Atrox Factory also provides a real carnival atmosphere and features a variety of different activities; such as fortune-tellers, large video screens projecting horror films, souvenir stands, and even appearances of various horror celebrities. Over the years, the haunt has allowed their guests to meet and greet such genre names as Kane Hodder, Robert Englund, Michael Bailey Smith, Dick Warlock, Doug Bradley, Linda Blair, Cassandra Peterson (Elvira), Angus Scrimm, Bill Moseley, and more.
