Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
According to early 19th Century urban legend, a barber named Sweeney Todd slit the throats of up to 160 "customers," dropped their bodies through a trap door into his cellars, then took the bloody remains to his accomplice, Mrs. Lovett, who'd turn them into meat pies. The tale persisted into the 20th Century, when it was filmed several times (twice silent, then with Tod Slaughter in 1936, Ray Winstone in 2006 and as a 2007 film adaptation of the Sondheim Broadway musical, directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp). Many historians have argued that Todd was entirely fictional, while others (including prolific author/historian Peter Haining) insist the tales are all based on true events. At any rate, the long-accepted traditional location of Sweeney Todd's shop is Clifford's Inn Passage, a tiny alley just off London's Fleet Street.
