Fortune Theatre
This theatre opened on November 8, 1924 with the production of Laurence Cowen's Sinners, which ran for only two weeks. Throughout the 30's, there were a variety of different productions that played throughout its halls, which ultimately was used by the ENSA to hold concert for Allied forces in World War II. It has since served host to performances featuring the likes of Dame Judi Dench, Dudley Moore, Dirk Bogarde. It only has a seating capacity of 432, which makes it one of the smallest theatres in London's West End.
The Woman in Black
Fortune Theatre has played host to the supernatural production of The Woman in Black since 1989. The play is an adaptation by Stephen Mallatratt of the Susan Hill novel of the same name. The novel has also spawned a television adaptation, which is regarded by many as one of the spookiest films made. The Woman in Black concerns a young lawyer who is sent to a desolate location to settle the estate of a recently deceased client. There he finds that the estate and town are cursed by the ghostly visage of the Woman in Black, whom he fears may have cursed him as well. The theatrical production takes the story into the future, as a now older lawyer hires an actor to help him act out his experiences for his family. As the two begin to read from the script, strange things start to take place as the past is revisited.
The Woman in Black, which has only a cast of three, first debuted in 1987 at the theatre-by-the-sea in Scarborough before moving to the Fortune Theatre in 1989. Its success has spawned performances worldwide and is widely admired by spooked-out audiences and critics alike. |
