Information
The Stone Cliff Inn
This restaurant in Carver, Oregon gained a little worldwide notoriety when it played a role in the 2008 vampire/fantasy film, Twilight. The Stone Cliff Inn Restaurant and Bar officially opened in 2004 on the hills overlooking the nearby Clackamas River. Despite its name, the facility is purely a restaurant and bar that also hosts a variety of other events. Surrounding the restaurant are scenic hiking trails that takes guests into the surrounding old growth and granite spires. It is this scenery that would play a prominent role in the 2008 film adaptation of the bestselling novel, Twilight.

Twilight (2008)
The film is an adaptation of the first book in a series of novels by author Stephenie Meyer that follow the romance of a teenage girl and a century-old vampire. As of this writing, the books have sold over 40 million copies worldwide and have been translated into 37 different languages. Given its success, it should be no surprise that a movie adaptation would soon follow. Though Twilight is set in the area around the very-real city of Forks, Washington (see Forks, Washington under Literary Sites), the filmmakers opted to film much of the movie in locations throughout northern Oregon for budgetary concerns.

Interestingly enough, the Stone Cliff Inn's role in the production came about rather spontaneously. The filmmakers had already scouted the perfect location for the filming of the extremely popular "meadow scene" from the book in the foothills of nearby Mount Hood. As it turned out, the meadow they had chosen was under several feet of snow by the time the production rolled around and the crew was left scrambling to find another location to fill in. The area would be "discovered" by Twilight location managers, James Lin and Beth Milnick, quite accidentally when they stopped at the restaurant for a bite to eat. It turned out to be ideal for their needs and production arrived in April 2008.

The end result turned out that the "meadow scene" would actually be shot at three separate locations, with the scenery behind the restaurant playing a major role. The property appears in the sequence shortly after the character of Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) reveals to Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) that she knows he is a vampire, which was reportedly filmed at nearby Oxbow Park (see Oxbow Regional Park, Oregon). The sequence then moves to this location amongst the moss-covered boulders, where Edward reveals his abilities and steps into the sunlight for her to see. Ultimately, director Catherine Hardwicke opted for a minor re-shoot of some of the sequence after Twilight had officially wrapped production to truly add the "meadow" for the "meadow scene." This sequence was added immediately after the boulder-sequence and was actually shot at the Wilson Municipal Golf Course located on the grounds of Griffith Park, Los Angeles, California.

Surprisingly, the actual restaurant does not make an appearance in Twilight, but rather only the property behind the restaurant. The filmmakers had expressed a desire to use the interiors of the Stone Cliff Inn for the setting of one sequence, but scheduling conflicts arose that ultimately caused the scene to be shot elsewhere. As result, only exteriors of the forested property were shot at this location.

When filming the big reveal of Edward stepping into the sun, the production ran into delays when the weather suddenly turned and it began to rain. Fortunately, the crew decided to wait it out and the skies rewarded them by clearing. The break in the weather gave them one hour to get the shot, which was aided by a studio light filling in for the actual sun.

The Restaurant Today
The Stone Cliff Inn still operates as a restaurant to this day and offers an array of specialized events to meet their customers needs. They also firmly embrace their role in the Twilight universe and even feature photos from the production out in front of the restaurant, with plans to make further information available to Twilight fans in the near future. The property behind the restaurant (including the area used in the production) is open to the general public, but those interested in visiting need to remember that the business is active and should show respect to both the business and their patrons.
