The Lizzie Borden Bed & Breakfast
The Lizzie Borden Bed & Breakfast is located in the home where the murders occurred. Visitors can tour the home and murder scenes and guests may spend the night in the house.
The Bed & Breakfast (B&B) was started by former owners Martha McGinn and Simone and Ron Evans in the 1990s. They painstakingly restored the house to appear as it did in 1892 when the murders occurred. They purchased furniture identical to what appears in photos of the home at the time. They even matched the wallpaper designs.
Tours
The Lizzie Borden Bed & Breakfast offers tours of the home daily for an entrance fee. The tour takes visitors through the entire house, including the two rooms in which the murders occurred. The B&B has photos of the crime scenes in the rooms in which they took place. It also features actual artifacts from the Borden family, including Lizzie's books. Lastly, the B&B has a mannequin wearing the dress that actress Elizabeth Montgomery wore in her role as Lizzie Borden in the 1975 TV movie The Legend of Lizzie Borden. Tour guides tell the story of the family, the murders, the subsequent trial and the aftermath while conducting the tour. Guides also answer questions about the case for the inquisitive.
Gift Shop
The Lizzie Borden Bed & Breakfast also features a gift shop where a shoppers can purchase ghoulish mementos of their visit. Shoppers can choose amongst t-shirts, hatchet key chains, Lizzie Borden bobble-head dolls, books and other assorted items.
Bed and Breakfast
Overnight guests can reserve rooms belonging to various family members including Lizzie's own bedroom. A daring guest can even book a night in the John Morse room - the bedroom in which Abby Borden was murdered in. The crime scene photos and Lizzie Borden mannequin in the John Morse room add a further creepy chill to those who choose to catch forty winks where Abby caught her "forty whacks." A stay at the B&B also provides guests with a narrated tour and free roam of the rooms not inhabited by guests. There are also books and videos dealing with the murders for guests to peruse. Some of the videos are re-enactments that were filmed in the house itself.
Breakfast on the morning following a guest's stay is a historical re-enactment in and of itself. Guests are treated to a breakfast based on the foods common to the time period the murders occurred. The hosts refrain from serving a meal based on what was actually eaten on the morning of the murders - as most guests would find poorly refrigerated three day old mutton stew unappetizing. The actual breakfast served consists of some standard morning fare, such as eggs and bacon. The breakfast also features Johnny Cakes. No, this is not a person. Johnny Cakes are small pancakes made with corn meal; they were a common breakfast food in the era in which the murders occurred. The breakfast comes with commentary from the chef on the breakfast served on the morning of the murders. That, and the fact that guests are dining in the room in which Andrew and Abby were autopsied. Lastly, with a smirk the chef brings out sugar cookies shaped like tiny axes with a touch of red frosting on their sugared blades.
The Supernatural
There has been more than a few sightings of possible supernatural events in the house since the murders. Stories range from ghostly lights appearing in photos, to a maid seeing a depression in the shape of a body appear in the blankets atop the bed in the room where Abby Borden was murdered. There is another odd, if not supernatural story. The first family to own the house after the Bordens had both of the children born, years apart, on the anniversary of the murders.
New Ownership
In recent years the Lizzie Borden Bed & Breakfast Museum has come under the management of new owners, Lee-ann Wilbur and Donald Woods. The two have been bringing their own touches to the business. They have staged re-enactments on the anniversary of the murders for guests to walk through. They have brought in psychics to perform readings and a local author to sign copies of his Lizzie Borden book. They have also started candle-lit tours of the home for further atmosphere.
They are also taking great strides in further setting the Borden House back to a state of how it appeared in 1890. In the time since the murders, the Borden's barn was knocked down and a print shop was built to wrap around the home. Wilbur and Woods have demolished the print shop and built a replica of the barn so that the house will appear as it once did. They also constructed a parking lot behind the house to make visits more convenient for guests and visitors. The new owners are also re-upholstering some of the re-created furniture to make it further match the historical pieces they represent. They have been continuing to purchase actual Borden artifacts for the B&B's collection as well. |
