Supernatural Rochester is home to one of the most famous of the legendary "White Lady" spectres. It is said to haunt Durand Eastman Park (see Durand Eastman Park). Manitou Road is named for the evil Native American spirit of Legend. There have been written accounts of a supernatural beast that appears as a severed head with a bat's wings that beats at doors and windows, leering in at the startled occupants. The Fox Sisters, a famous trio of mediums who were founders of Spiritualism, lived in Hydesville near Rochester. Their seances in a supposedly haunted farmhouse (see Lilydale, New York) gave rise to the Spiritualist movement. Was Jack the Ripper an American? The only American suspect in the Jack the Ripper murders grew up in Rochester, NY. He is buried in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery (see Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Rochester, New York). The Genessee River Killer Cannibalistic serial killer Arthur Shawcross murdered 11 of his 13 confirmed victims in Rochester, NY over a two year period in the late 1980s. The Place Where Rod Serling Died Writer/producer/director Rod Serling died at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. Rochester's Dark Literary Connections Horror author H.P. Lovecraft's father was born and raised in Rochester. A decent number of Lovecraft's close relatives are buried in Mount Hope Cemetery (see Mount Hope Cemetery, Rochester, NY). In Stephenie Meyer's Twilight Saga novels, the vampires Carlislse, Edward and Esme Cullens move to Rochester in 1931 and live there for a few years. The character of Rosalie Lillian Hale was born in Rochester in 1915. In 1933, at the age of 18, on the way home from visiting a friend, she is raped and is beaten nearly to death by her drunken fiancee' and a group of his wealthy friends. Carlisle finds her lying, near death, in the streets and turns her into a vampire to keep her from dying. She joins in with Cullen's coven of vampires and eventually winds up in Forks, Washington (see Forks, Washington) in 2005. The Rochester area is home to horror authors T.M. Wright and T. Lucien Wright (who also happen to be twin brothers). Under the pseudonym F.W. Armstrong, T.M. Wright authored the horror novel The Changing (1985). The book spins a tale about a werewolf stalking the streets of Rochester for victims. The book features a number of Rochester landmarks. A number of scenes in the book happen in Kodak Park. James Howe, author of the Bunnicula children's book series, spent a decent portion of his youth living in Webster, a suburb of Rochester. The future author of Bunnicula, Howliday Inn and The Celery Stalks at Midnight demonstrated an early interest in the macabre by forming a club he dubbed the"Vampire Legion" and producing a newsletter called "The Gory Gazette." Another children's book, Yobgorgle: Mystery Monster of Lake Ontario by Daniel Pinkwater, is set in Rochester. It deals with a young vegetarian boy who gets pulled into an adventure while visiting the city. He and his uncle help a local professor investigate Ontario's lake monster, a giant aquatic pig. High Falls The High Falls (see High Falls, Genesee River, Rochester, NY) was the site of early 19th century dare devil Sam Patch's gruesome death. Patch was known for jumping off tall water falls, sometimes accompanied on the way down by his pet bear. Despite having jumped from the High Falls before and having jumped from the slightly taller Niagara Falls, Sam was killed during a jump on Friday the 13th of 1829. His frozen corpse was found months later in nearby Charlotte. Sam Patch appears as a character in literary works by Herman Melville and Nathaniel Hawthorne. The High Falls was also the scene of Rochester's most fatal fire and the murder of Charles Littles in the 1800s. Little's murder was followed by a near comedy of errors on the part of his murderers. The crime was sensationalized by the local papers. The Musical The Alphabet Killer Cherry Crush The Fall of the House of Usher (1928) The Little Theatre Rochester is home to The Little Theatre, one of the oldest art house film theaters still in operation. The Little Theatre at times will show obscure horror films that don't get play in mainstream cinemas. The theater is also home to the 25-Hour Horror Feast film festival (see The Little Theatre, Rochester, NY). The Garbage Plate No trip to Rochester is complete without a stop by either Nick Tahou's Restaurant for a "Garbage Plate" or one of the other restaurants for one of their Garbage Plate knock-offs. A traditional garbage plate consists of homefries, macaroni salad and either two hot dogs or two hamburger patties slapped on top of the mess. This is then doused with a special chunky hot sauce, mustard and onions. It is to Rochester what Buffalo Wings are to Buffalo, NY. Just be prepared, if you haven't seen one before, it may be the scariest thing you encounter in Rochester.

The Hillside Strangler is the media epithet for two men, Kenneth Bianchi and Angelo Buono, cousins who were convicted of kidnapping, raping, torturing, and killing girls and women ranging in age from 12 to 28 years old during a four-month period from late 1977 to early 1978. They committed their crimes in the hills above Los Angeles, California.
